- Turns out there was already an onwiki version at User:SDZeroBot/Articles with links to drafts - it happened to be one of the bot's demonstration queries in its botrfa. - @Srbernadette: I am not sure how to "fix" that citation. It is a link to a stock photo website showing a hand-written letter. This does nothing to support the sentence in the article about the Library of Australia. Perhaps the url provided is wrong? I suggest re-evaluating your source. I think you're proposing to add commons:Category:David Blackburn to commons:File:Sarah_Meadows_Martineau_(d.1800).jpg. You add categories to images in Commons just as you add categories to articles in Wikipedia. But Martineau wasn't Blackburn. (Likewise, Edith, Sacheverell, and numerous other more or less noteworthy Sitwells weren't Osbert Sitwell, and commons:Category:Osbert Sitwell doesn't include pictures of them, other than incidentally.) -- Hoary (talk) 11:42, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Information taken from an external link - inline citation needed?
editI have failed to deduct it from Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:External links: When an information in an article is directly taken from an external link (update: which is set in the "external link" section of the article) - does that require an inline citation? If required, let's distinguish cases depending on their complexity: From only one external link to only one specific webpage (so one click is sufficient for the reader to find the information for the source) to several structured external websites (so the reader might have to guess in which source to look for the informatiuon, and then find the right webpage for getting the info of the source). --KnightMove (talk) 11:29, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, KnightMove. I'm not sure I quite understand what you are asking, but I'll answer as best I can.
- All information in an article should be available from a reliable published source - it doesn't matter what medium that source is published in, as long as a reader can in principle obtain it (eg by ordering a book from a major library). If the source is online, it's easier, but that's not required.
- The policies don't absolutely require all information to be cited to its published source, but it's certainly preferred to cite everything inline, and if information has been challenged, then it must be.
- The citation should enable the reader to determine the likely value of the source, and to find it specifically; so it should contain information such as title, date, author, publisher, journal, issue, page number (obviously, not all of these are relevant to every citation). If the information is available online, then it is helpful (but not essential) to provide a link to it, within the citation - but there's no point in providing a link which doesn't lead directly to it.
- Apart from citations, external links are allowed in articles only in restricted circumstances: see WP:ELYES.

- Why would you remove an external link, which perfectly serves the purpose of providing further information on the article topic to the reader, from the external link section and "hide" it among inline references which do, in general, not serve that purpose; just because an information from the external link was added in the article? Editing Mediawiki
editI would like to add an edit suggestion to Mediawiki but I couldn't find a a place to comment on the GitHub. Where should I comment?
My suggestion is as follows:
Is there a way to move a a section of an article and keep transfer the edit history to the new page in Wikipedia? wikipedia:Section_move#Step_5:_Move_the_content Implies that this isn't possible. If there is a Mediawiki fork with this feature, I recommend for it to be added to the main branch. If not I will begin development, if there is interest. Garvey 96 (talk) 11:36, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- I would start at WP:VPT. That's specifically within Wikipedia, but it's likely that people there can tell you whether the facility is available, whether it has been discussed before, or where to go next. ColinFine (talk) 12:23, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- No, there is no such capability. The MediaWiki database does not record which section of a page is being edited, so it is not possible to select only the edits which changed content in any particular section. When we are moving the content of an entire section to a different page, our content license requires attribution to the original contributors, and our policy on copying within Wikipedia suggests that noting the origin either with a link in the edit summary or a template on the talk page of the destination page satisfies the attribution requirement.
- I don't want to say it's impossible, but I think it would be a very large challenge to implement history-preserving section moves. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 14:06, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- It's feasible to copy the entire history of a page - not just those relevant to one section - into another title, with the right permissions: export to xml, then import it back at another title. - It would probably be more practical for someone who is an admin on both Wikipedia and one of its import sources (a surprisingly large group of people given that includes test2wiki where anyone who is an admin here would probably be given it on request) to import the page from enwiki to some other wiki and then import it back here. - @Garvey 96: You're new here so you may not know how our article sections typically work. A section heading may be added to existing content which was written over years. Paragraphs or sentences may be moved in and out of a section within the same article. A full page edit may make changes to both a section and other parts of the page. Even if an edit only changes one section, many users don't use the section edit feature which adds the section name in the edit summary. Edits by bots usually don't have a section name in the edit summary. And a section may be renamed multiple times anyway. Page histories are shown in chronological order. If a section is moved to an existing page with a page history then a merged page history would be a huge mess if edits to the two original pages are interleaved. The only realistic option appears to be copying the entire page history to a new page like mw:Extension:Duplicator did but we never used it. I suggest you drop the idea. There are too many problems and we don't need it when we can just link the source page in the edit summary if a section is moved. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:01, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

- If you didn't save the faulty edit, just closed the tab, then the original is unchanged. Reopen the tab and start again. the current version is that by 05:16, GünniX at 05:16, 10 January 2024. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 13:16, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- You haven't made an edit since 14:32, 7 January 2024. So reload the page or ctrl+z.

- For one, you should create an account that explicitly discloses your paid relationship to the client. Typically that is made on your user page. You may start a draft, but be aware that if it passes muster (that is, it isn't promotional or written in a non-neutral tone) and makes it into the encyclopedia proper, neither you nor your client will have control (nor will you be encouraged to directly edit it at that point) over what is written down if reliable sources state information, even those that depict your client in a bad light. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:57, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

How do I know when to write "propylaea", "propylaia", "propylaeum", "propylaeon" and "propylaion" with a capital letter and when not to? Both forms are used in the article. JackkBrown (talk) 15:42, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

- @JackkBrown: It's similar to Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2023 November 27#"Forum" or "forum"? If it's used as a general noun for the type of structure then it's lowercase. If it's used as the proper name of a specific structure like Propylaea (Munich) or Propylaia (Acropolis of Athens) then it's uppercase. There may be sentences where both interpretations are possible. Grandmother
editDear team,
My grandmother, Dorothea Livio, unfortunately passed away recently. She was a famous Jewish singer from Romania living in Israel.
There are already two exisiting pages of her, one in Romanian and one in Hebrew (included below for your reference).
Now I would also like to add an English version, however, as I am new to wikipedia I am not sure whether I should make an entire new page, of if I can somehow recylce the Romanian of Hebrew page and only provide a translation.

- Hello, I am sorry for your loss. You may first wish to examine the notability criteria for musicians to see if your grandmother meets at least one aspect of them. This may be different thant the Romanian or Hebrew Wikipedias, as each Wikipedia is a separate project, with its own editors and policies. - Hello, Noamcosla. I have read machine translated versions of both articles since I do not speak either Romanian or Hebrew. Your grandmother had a long and interesting life. The shortcoming of those articles is that they are poorly referenced by the standards of the English Wikipedia. You would need to create references to independent, reliable published sources that devote significant coverage to her life. Staff written obituaries are OK, but family written obituaries aren't. Image deletion request on The Ambassadors (Holbein)

I added an image to The Ambassadors (Holbein) being File:Holbein-tube.png. There is an image deletion request on it which I have added a dispute to, following the instructions in the notice, on the file page and talk page. However, the notice at The Ambassadors (Holbein) states that "This file has an invalid non-free use claim and may be deleted after Friday, 12 January 2024". Name change suggestion

- I wonder. The article says little about her, but mostly refers to her as Mable E. Buland, merely mentioning at the end that she married some fellow named Campbell. This suggests to me that "Mable Buland" would be a better choice.
