Anything can be replaced with text (even misspelled text). That's not a reason. If you want to remove all pictures from Wikipedia, please, just say so. But to try to couch it into some arcane interpretation of fair use doctrine that has no relation to legal reality is just plain silly. --khaosworks (talk • contribs) 12:14, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You brought it up (and I don't see what argument I'm supposed to be avoiding by the way). And no, I can describe "The Persistence of Memory" with text if I wanted to. But the impact of the painting, and its point, is certainly lost if you can't actually see it. Which is also one of the points with this screenshot. But we obviously disagree. In raising other images which may also be deleted, you have strayed into WP:OTHERSTUFF, we should discuss the merits of this image, not the validity of WP policy, or other images. I apologise for not making this point more explicitly Fasach Nua (talk) 12:58, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. All these countries' laws only allow this limited form of freedom of panorama: images of architectural works, photographic works, or works of fine art (which includes sculptures and statues) that are permanently located in publicly accessible places may be published only for non-commercial purposes and if the depicted copyrighted base work is not the main subject of the image.
Per Bern Convention the copyright law of Armenia is binding in the United States where Wikimedia servers are located. Therefore the derivative works of the memorial itself is licensed non-commercially. They can only be used on Wikipedia with a non-free license. Either the images need to be deleted or relicensed. If they get relicensed their use will be restricted.

  • Strong keep, if the license is invalid, these images could easily have valid fair-use rationale's written as they are clearly important images that help the reader to understand the topic. Do we know who is the named architect(s) of this monument? Have these images, or similar Armenian images been deleted from commons ? If so, a pointer to the discussion there would be handy.     I know not who the architects of the monument is. I do know Armenian law which does not allow commercial use. The article states that the "[...] construction began in 1966 and it was completed in 1968" meaning if the architects died the day after it would not add up to 70 years. These images can be used freely 70 years after the death of the creators (the architects) making the images PD.
    Yes such images have been deleted from commons before and will continue to be deleted. Commons regrettably does not accept fair use. I am more than willing to upload the images deleted in commons to en.wikipedia provided there is a use for them under a fair-use license. Is there such a need?
    You are welcome to relicense the images over here under fair-use and remove its use per our fair-use guidelines such as removing them from userpages and etc.

I think it's ridiculous that you would think that because certain copyrights are applicable to the the software (which is released for FREE) that a small image of the software would be "illegal". In fact I was talking with one of the original Meetro programmers and they encouraged such use. Well whatever, it means nothing to me if you want to delete it.--Jeff (talk) 21:23, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to WP:FAIR, screenshots of programs are fine for "critical commentary". My problem is that the image is not being used in the article, only on its talk page. I would say delete, if the image is not put to encyclopedic use. Larry V (talk | e-mail) 01:47, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
