- Thanks, WomenArtistUpdates for pulling this this together.
- I have a question regarding the name of #321: currently, "Women in Asia", but what about "Asian women" (which would include diaspora), or even just "Asia"? --Rosiestep (talk) 18:34, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Rosiestep, Good suggestion. Done --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:43, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hmmm, Every November I usually include a few women who had careers in Asia (educators, medical missionaries, diplomats, etc.), but many of them wouldn't make sense to include if the title is "Asian women". Which is fine, it's nice to switch it up and include the diaspora; just adding another perspective on the title. Penny Richards (talk) 22:32, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Pinging TheResilientEngineer. You offered to work on redlists for engineers. Any updates? Thanks. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 22:56, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hey I've cleaned up this list Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Engineering to take out all the blue links (bar one that popped up recently). I would like to extend it to other geographies but I don't know who the engineering institutions are for them so it's a bit difficult to find lists to work from. Happy for others to add, it's clean and I've extended it a bit. TheResilientEngineer (talk) 16:26, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- I've also drafted the women in engineering Event page using the STEM one as a template.
- The red lists don't seem to disaggregate by discipline (except for civil engineers) so the list of red lists is not as extensive as for say STEM. I hope that's okay? Or are there suggestions on how to navigate this? TheResilientEngineer (talk) 17:24, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks TheResilientEngineer! It looks good to me. I have no understanding of engineering though. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:15, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- @WomenArtistUpdates so if I wanted to create a redlist of women Impressionists.....how do we do that? I'm still new to wiki and very much still learning. I think it might be helpful to be able to create lists of:
- Civil Engineers
- Mechanical Engineers
- Chemical Engineers
- Electrical Engineers
- Biomedical Engineers
- Materials Scientists (If this doesn't already exist elsewhere)
- TheResilientEngineer (talk) 08:26, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- I worked it out. We now have some separate redlists TheResilientEngineer (talk) 10:17, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- You are already waaay ahead of me TheResilientEngineer. I have no idea how to create a redlist. I do know how to put a hardhat on our WIR bun lady though :) What do you think? --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 19:02, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- I absolutely love the hard hat! TheResilientEngineer (talk) 22:54, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- I rather like the hard hat. I think it will stand out as something new and interesting.--Ipigott (talk) 07:53, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

- Event #323: Women in engineering basically just needs reviewing and it's ready to go. I've tried extending the CS redlist to other countries by looking for members of national academies. There's a few folks I've added that are really good candidates for pages. So hopefully we'll be able to make quite a few great biographies! TheResilientEngineer (talk) 14:37, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
I started 'Islands - Q to Z' so it needs a review Lajmmoore (talk) 09:08, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- I started Asian women. It needs a reviewer. Also more input on whether it should be "Asian women" or "Women in Asia". I have no preference. Tie breaker anyone? --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:17, 22 October 2024 (UTC)

Get to 20
editAccording to my projections of the increasing numbers of women's biographies, the number of women's biographies should be hitting 20% of all biographies by the end of the year. I wondered if it would perhaps be worth doing an end-of-year edit-a-thon to help us nudge it over the line. Unlike the usual themed characters of our monthly edit-a-thons, this one could be more of a free-for-all to encourage as much creation as possible. Just an idea. --Grnrchst (talk) 08:14, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
De-orphan December
editAdding a suggestion here for a deorphaning theme: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Women_in_Red#de-orphaning_as_monthly_initiative? However, looking I wonder if December might be a bit full with other themes? Lajmmoore (talk) 06:23, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- "De-orphan December" has a nice ring to it. Also, I think some editors will be grateful for this option in this month. --Rosiestep (talk) 07:08, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- I did quite a lot of deorphaning in August-September and think that making it one of several themes is a good idea. There is little point in several people trying to deorphan the same article and finding it has already been done. We should encourage volunteers to add links which improve the articles edited, rather than to deorphan articles at any cost. Deorphaning is also a good opportunity to see whether the article can be improved in other ways. TSventon (talk) 16:54, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Women with highest links to other Wikipedias, but not EN
edit- As per this discussion, perhaps a focus on women who are well represented in languages that aren't English, using this list. Might need a catchier title though? Lajmmoore (talk) 17:26, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Lajmmoore: I actually already proposed an "Interwiki edit-a-thon" along these lines (see below). --Grnrchst (talk) 10:26, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
- When I sort one of our geofocus redlists on the "number of links" column, a depressing number of the top ranking are usually porn stars. Do we want to focus our editors' minds on them? I'm showing my biases here, but I can't help but think there are more worthwhile contributions we could make to en.wiki. But as long as we remind our editors to skim through the highly-linked lists looking for someone who seems a real gap in en.wiki, it could be useful. PamD 18:40, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

#PendingDrafts
editAs per Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red#Women-related articles at AfC, suggesting that we begin a never-ending event (along the lines of #1day1woman) focused on women-related AfC articles. This will take some set-up work, but the idea is that methodical awareness of these articles and collaborative assistance with improving them will increase the possibility that the draft will make it to mainpage, and that the newbie editor will come to know they aren't alone. --Rosiestep (talk) 08:34, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

editRevolutionary women
editHey all. For quite a while now I've been working on articles about revolutionary women (i.e. women who either participated in revolutions or were involved in revolutionary movements/organisations). Most of my submissions have been to other themed events, but I was thinking it might be fun to do a specific edit-a-thon focused on revolutionary women. I can try putting together a red list for it, perhaps we could do it some time next year? --Grnrchst (talk) 14:39, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
Interwiki edit-a-thon
editI was just fiddling around with the number of links redlist, as I noticed it hadn't updated in over a year, and managed to get it back to working order. It got me thinking whether we should have an edit-a-thon focused specifically on creating articles with a high number of interwiki links; the redlist includes articles with 7 or more interwiki links. This could be a nice way to focus on the higher importance (for lack of a better term) articles that other language wikis have recognised as worthy of articles. --Grnrchst (talk) 09:46, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- Support! as I think it's an interesting perspective. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:10, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Checklist for updates of virtual meetups
editThis section is purely administrative. It is not about the ongoing discussions of topics.
WiR generally has a variety of monthly, quarterly and annual events. WiR also sends out an “invitation” to its registered participants notifying them of those events. This is an effort to list tasks associated with the administrative tasks of updating and adding pages. We will be maintaining this list to assist with Quality Assurance. This is a working document and should be maintained to reflect current bast practices. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:52, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
As of March 2024 we are working with a new set of cascading templates. Because the template speak to each other the preview of the template might not be as expected. For example 302 might look like 304. Additionally some pages won't preview correctly unless the editor purges the page to update the cache.
The interrelated templates allow us to make changes and pages once, without updating new and past events throughout the WiR ecosystem. This will ultimately reduce mistakes, bad directs, and misinformation. The coders involved are watching these pages to ensure they work correctly. March 2024 is the first iteration. If direction are not clear it is the drafter's fault - not the coders, so please be gentle.
This is a working document and should be maintained to reflect current bast practices. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:43, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

- Step 1 - Add details of the event to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/events (see instructions at Template:WikiProject Women in Red/doc#Technical info). This will automatically update the various lists of events, and also allows editors to tag the article talk pages with
{{WikiProject Women in Red}}
or its shortcut{{WIR}}
. - Step 2
- Create the event page at
Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/n
where n is the number of the new event. You can use the{{WIR meetup header}}
template to help you.{{WIR meetup header}}
will populate the event header and right side infoboxes. * Then copy and sections from previous month to add boilerplate language. For example, start at Participants copy through the bottom of the page (XYZ as an example). update month and event number in the pasted sections. - Then add the "body" of the page (welcome, redlists, purpose) using a similar editathon as a starting point.
- Step 3 Create a new category for meetup articles (e.g. at Category:WikiProject Women in Red meetup 323 articles). Add the template {{WIR category}} to the new category.
- Step 4 Create the invite (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Outreach/2024#March 2024) using the previous month's invite as a go-by.
- Step 5 Invite and receive feedback from a sufficient number of WiR enthusiasts that the event page and invite are okay. Mark reviewed items with
{{ok}}
- Step 6 Send out MassMessage notification.
