The following system of transliteration of Ukrainian from the Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet is being proposed as a part to the proposed Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Cyrillic). Current practice is documented at Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(Cyrillic)#Ukrainian . Please discuss at the talk page.

Conventional name

edit

An object that has a conventional name in English should be named that way, instead of transliterating.

  • For example: Chorne moreBlack Sea, UkrainaUkraine.

National transliteration system

edit

The following table describes a method to derive the most common informal transcriptions of Ukrainian names into the Latin alphabet, suitable for English-speakers.

The table matches the simplified National transliteration system. ([1],[2])

The system corresponds to BGN/PCGN romanization system of Ukrainian, with the following exceptions:

  • г in the combination зг transliterates into gh;
  • є, ю, я transliterate into ie, iu, ia, except at the beginning of words;
  • ї, й both transliterate into i, except at the beginning of words;
  • щ transliterates into sch;
  • ь and apostrophe are omitted, except in ьо and ьї.
