Splitting Antarctica

Due to some heavy lifting by User:Dr. Blofeld, User:Александр Мотин, and li'l ol' me, Category:Antarctica geography stubs ballooned considerably a couple of months ago. I've been doing what stub-sorting I can, and have winnowed the parent category down considerably; this has, however, come at the expense of overpopulating some of the subcategories: Category:East Antarctica geography stubs and Category:West Antarctica geography stubs in particular. So my question: what is to be done about them?
I've been giving it some thought, and the best thing I could think of would be to divide them further by segments - for instance, {{QueenMaudLand-geo-stub}}, {{RossDependency-geo-stub}}, that sort of thing. It's not ideal, and I can see that it might leave a lot by the wayside, but it might be a good start at dealing with the problem. I am, of course, open to any better suggestions you have for this. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:04, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Sounds reasonable.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:37, 31 December 2010 (UTC) Support– Certainly a good way to reduce where reduction is desperately needed. ~Gosox(55)(55) 19:56, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
- Support. I've suggested a RossDep one in the past, but never got round to doing much about it. an {{AdelieLand-geo-stub}} might be useful, too, small though Adelie Land may be. Grutness...wha? 22:28, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
- What about something like {{SouthShetlandIslands-geo-stub}}? That would cover a deal of ground, too. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:34, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
- They (and all other subantarctic islands) are covered by {{Subantarctic-geo-stub}} already. Sounds like there may be some under-sorting between the antarctica and subantarctic geo stubs. Mind you, the Subantarctic category's at over 800, so it may be worthwhile at that. Grutness...wha? 04:28, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
- Well, there are currently something like 300-odd stub articles in the South Shetlands categories, as I recall. Add those to the sub-Antarctic category and it risks overpopulation. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:30, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
- In that case, a {{SouthShetlands-geo-stub}} (note the amended name) is a very good idea! Grutness...wha? 10:14, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

- Suppport all four above named templates and categories when they pass 60 (some serious lifting going on there a cat with almost 2000 articles and 2 subcats over 4000 each!! - major sorting required) good luck. Waacstats (talk) 13:13, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
- I shall probably begin tackling them sometime this weekend, then. I may dig up a few more to suggest, too. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:40, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Psychiatrists, part deux

Having sorted a bucket-load of psychiatrists using the new {{Psychiatrist-stub}} and {{US-psychiatrist-stub}}, it looks like there's enough for a speediable category for the Americans. Well, not quite speediable, owing to ambiguities about the name - it's a partner of Category:American psychologist stubs but a child of Category:United States medical biography stubs. Given that the permcat is at Category:American psychiatrists, it should probably be at Category:American psychiatrist stubs, but I'm open to offers...
It also looks like a handful more upmerged templates would be useful, too - {{UK-psychiatrist-stub}}, {{France-psychiatrist-stub}} and {{Germany-psychiatrist-stub}} would account for around 30 stubs each. Grutness...wha? 07:01, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

- That was my thinking with the US/American business, too - personally I'd have preferred United States, but American makes more sense in terms of the category tree. Grutness...wha? 22:53, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

A combination of two catscans, here and (if that isn't everything) also here. If they were involved in state or federal government, I would sort by state. If they were involved in tribal government, I would sort as NativeAmerican. ~Gosox(55)(55) 17:56, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Found the following as likely categories. Note: I used the size search in catscan, so these counts may be off, and may not reduce the parent category as much as indicated:
- {{Osmeriformes-stub}} / Category:Osmeriformes stubs. About 69 articles.
- {{Lophiiformes-stub}} / Category:Lophiiformes stubs. About 68 articles.
- {{Gadiformes-stub}} / Category:Gadiformes stubs. About 113 articles.
- {{Syngnathiformes-stub}} / Category:Syngnathiformes stubs. About 81 articles.
Also, the following should support creation of the template:
- {{Stomiiformes-stub}}. About 49 articles.
- {{Beloniformes-stub}}. About 47 articles.

This one could proove a little awkward as the following would all be viable but may be not together.
- {{Trombonist-stub}} - Category:Trombonist stubs (105)
- {{jazz-trombonist-stub}} - Category:Jazz trombonist stubs (75)
- {{US-trombonist-stub}} - Category:American trombonist stubs (70)
- {{US-jazz-trombonist-stub}} - Category:American jazz trombonist stubs (60)
the numbers are my best guess as to the potential size of each category assuming that any subcats are not created (i.e amongst the 105 trombonists are 60 US-jazz and 45 others). I think the first and last will be enough for now, what does everyone else think. Waacstats (talk) 01:56, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

- I have no problem with a template (And likewise for other positions) but we normally only create categories which will (at the time of creation) contain at least 60 articles and as these guys would at most be 21 years old I think it may be awhile before we get to 60 articles. The following subtypes should almost certainly be viable for their own subcategories, and if not would be very useful as upmerged templates:
- {{NEast-archaeology-stub}} / Category:Near East archaeology stubs ("Near East" seems to be used in archaeology rather than "Middle East") (at least 70 stubs, plus many of those in Category:Ancient Egypt stubs, which would likely be a subcat)
- Upmerged {{Egypt-archaeology-stub}}, {{Israel-archaeology-stub}}, {{Turkey-archaeology-stub}}.
- {{UK-archaeology-stub}} / Category:United Kingdom archaeology stubs (≈75 stubs)
- {{Asia-archaeology-stub}} / Category:Asian archaeology stubs (≈65 stubs)
- Upmerged {{PRChina-archaeology-stub}}
- {{US-archaeology-stub}} / Category:United States archaeology stubs (not sure of the numbers, but likely >60)

We have {{Psychologist-stub}}, but no equivalent stub for its partner field of psychiatry. I'd like to pull a few categories out of this oversized category. I'd like to make the following categories. Article counts are pulled from cat scan and based on size, not necessarily just on previously tagged stubs.
- {{Chaenopsidae-stub}} / Category:Chaenopsidae stubs. About 99 articles.
- {{Chaetodontidae-stub}} / Category:Chaetodontidae stubs. About 71 articles.
- {{Clinidae-stub}} / Category:Clinidae stubs. About 102 articles.
- {{Percidae-stub}} / Category:Percidate stubs. About 73 articles.
Because I was basing strictly on article size, further investigation may bring these numbers down. Templates will be built first. Any of the listed categories that pass the 60 mark will be made into full categories. Dawynn (talk) 13:54, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Just noticed that we don't have any by-country stub templates for these. It's not a huge tragedy, but I think we ought to maybe get it sorted out. So I propose the following: {{Peru-airport-stub}}, {{Brazil-airport-stub}}, {{Bolivia-airport-stub}}, {{Chile-airport-stub}}, {{Colombia-airport-stub}}, {{Ecuador-airport-stub}}, {{Venezuela-airport-stub}}, {{Argentina-airport-stub}}, {{Paraguay-airport-stub}}, {{Uruguay-airport-stub}}, and {{FrenchGuiana-airport-stub}}. I'd like to propose a new split of the New York Registered Historic Place stubs. Currently, all the articles have been split by county. But enough of the counties are still small enough that they upmerge into an oversized state category. The result of the debate was create WWI and WWII + AmericanCivilWar-bio-stub.
Slightly oversized (at over 1000) suggest a split by war with the Civil war, WWI and WWII all viable. suggest the following:
- {{US-army-civilwar-bio-stub}} - Category:Civil War United States Army personnel stubs
- {{US-army-WWI-bio-stub}} - Category:World War I United States Army personnel stubs
- {{US-army-WWII-bio-stub}} - Category:World War II United States Army personnel stubs
Suggestions for improvements to names greatly accepted as these need improving. Waacstats (talk) 01:25, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- I fixed a couple of caps in the category titles for you - may I suggest {{US-army-CivilWar-bio-stub}} instead? That sounds a bit better to me, "Civil War" being as much a title as a description of what it was.
- Incidentally, what's the status of Confederate biographies, any idea? That may be viable grounds for another stub tag, though I'm not sure. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:56, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the corrections they all look good. As for the confederate biographies I have always put them in this category and according to catscan ther would not be enough for a Category:Union Army personnel stubs and Category:Confederate Army personnel stubs maybe using two templates {{Union-army-bio-stub}} and {{Confederate-army-bio-stub}} to populate a civil war category. - That works - but perhaps {{Union-mil-bio-stub}} and {{Confederate-mil-bio-stub}} instead? The high-level Oregon stub category, Category:Oregon stubs, has about 220 entries. Up to half are businesses and many of the others are organizations like festivals, farmers markets, clubs, etc. At the moment, I was looking for a stub tag for a volunteer mountain search and rescue: there doesn't seem to be a better category than the general Oregon stub.
I am completely oblivious to the inner operations of the stub group, but 200 seems like it adequately exceeds the suggested threshold of 30 to 60 category members where it would be reasonable to subdivide this classes of articles. In view of that, perhaps it would also be satisfactory to further subdivide this into commercial and for-profit groups versus volunteer and non-profit groups. —EncMstr (talk) 21:47, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
- I therefore suggest {{Oregon-corporate-stub}} and {{Oregon-organization-stub}} with corresponding category names. But I didn't check for parallels anywhere. —EncMstr (talk) 22:21, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- Weak support. 60 is the number of stubs that would be in the new subcategory, not the number currently in the category to be split; usually splitting out of an existing category only becomes a major issue when it has 600-800 stubs. The "sweet spot" at for a stub category is usually regarded as 150-400 stubs, so the current size of Category:Oregon stubs is pretty near spot on. Having said that, if there are as many org-stubs there as you say, it's a reasonable option. Grutness...wha? 04:23, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not keen on splitting businesses by state, but admit I don't think it is a major nono. If we are to go ahead I think that to fit in with elsewhere the templates would actually be {{Oregon-company-stub}} and {{Oregon-org-stub}} as -company- and -org- are used elsewhere. - Indeed they would - well spotted. Grutness...wha? 22:21, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
