Wikipedia:WikiProject Userboxes

This is the collaborative WikiProject on Wikipedia userbox templates.

Scope

edit

This WikiProject aims to organise, expand and improve all Wikipedia's userboxes. We want to make it easy for users to make their own, and to find others, as well as create a standard for all userboxes, including a global prefix and image.

Initial interests are to help change to a global prefix, reform all userboxes to such standards, re-categorise, and maintain.

The need for organisation led to 32 people joining the project within two days of its being founded.

Warning!

edit

If <br /> is required to organize the description of the userbox, make sure it is in between <noinclude></noinclude> tags[where?] as this causes major problems (e.g. userbox stacking). More work for us.[clarification needed]

Goals

edit

Anyone can assist, we currently aim to:

  1. Ensure all userboxes are within Wikipedia policy.
  2. Maintain the pages of Wikipedia:WikiProject Userboxes.
  3. Assist editors with designing and categorising new userboxes at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Userboxes/Ideas! (this page desperately needs more attention)
  4. Organise all userboxes, finding a place for them in Wikipedia:Userboxes/Galleries, and removing duplicates/orphaned userboxes.
  5. Organising categories, removing duplicates or unrequired ones (see also Wikipedia:User categorisation and WP:CFD).

Please raise any other issues which need to be identified on the talk page.

Tasks

edit

Remove all fair-use images from userboxes

edit
  • Their usage violates fair-use policy.
    • "Fair use images should only be used in the article namespace. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages."
      • Replace with text or another suitable image.
  • Only fair-use images need to be removed—NOT others.
  • Consider using the {{Images on userboxes}} template to notify the creator of Wikipedia policy regarding fair-use images on userboxes.

Userboxes without "user" prefix

edit

All the 'Userbox' prefixes have been dealt with (besides templates for creation), so we need to move over any stray boxes we notice without any prefix (See Guide to moving userboxes, below), and look out for new additions under 'Userbox'.

Merge duplicates of same template

edit

Duplicates need to be merged, choose the most suitable, turning the one for removal into a redirect, and following the guide below from step 2.

Diffusing large userbox categories

edit

Category:Userboxes (and subcategories marked with {{Category diffuse}}) both have gained a large number of userboxes that can be categorised into subcategories or other categories. If you can, change the category tag to these other categories. Also, there is a problem with the sorting of userboxes, as most of them are categorised as "U": these all need to be categorised by the first letter after "User". When creating a new sub-category, consider adding parameter |topic= to the template {{template category}}.

Guide to moving userboxes

edit

We are currently working on changing the prefixes of all known userboxes to 'User', for example {{User en}}. If you wish to help please follow the following guidelines for one userbox at a time.

  1. For any userbox without a 'User' prefix, move the template to a title with 'User' as the prefix (which will create a redirect from the original template);
  2. Go back to the redirect page and check what links to it. Visit every page which appears in that list, and change the template link on that page to the new name;
  3. When all links to the redirect page have been removed, then it is time to delete the redirect (delete yourself if admin, otherwise request here – Deletion can be performed as orphan and duplicate template).
