Welcome event

edit

I want to say welcome to those interested in participating in the collaboration between Wikipedia and Balboa Park! This has the potential to be help improve many articles on the park, San Diego, California, and various other fields including aircraft, wildlife, and historical subjects. The BPOC is eager to meet with Wikipedians to get an idea of Wikipedia's presence in San Diego and learn how we can best collaborate on articles, images, content, and research. The staff would like to meet at some point in June, and I'll find out the details of their preferred schedule. Does anyone here have a preference for when they'd be able to meet? The first event would be a sort of meet-and-greet to go over the priorities and strengths of both groups to see how this project can grow. I'm open to meeting on a weeknight or weekend, but please let me know what your ideal dates would be so we can try and coordinate this. If you have any questions, feel free to list them here, I'm curious on others' thoughts on the project. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 03:33, 2 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I work WED-SUN, but am able to meet Tuesdays and Saturday Mornings. Also, lets try to do this before our World famous comic con comes to town ;) .--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 17:17, 3 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Maybe a Saturday will work best. The staff indicated they were shooting for a June event, so that would definitely avoid conflicting with Comic-Con. Good job on getting tickets before they all got snatched up. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 05:06, 8 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
We generally purchase the day of Preview Night (Wednesday) to ensure we'll have tickets the next year. My wife and myself also volunteer with the Anime section, and are getting our assignments on the 18th of June, as to where they will need us this year. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 09:08, 9 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Best of luck on this project guys! I am originally from San Diego county (born in escondido), so I absolutely love Balboa Park! Next time I am coming out there, maybe I should find my way to a meetup? Have you guys tried WP:GEONOTICE? That might be the best way to find interested people. If you are holding an event, putting up a geonotice is a good way to bring in people who are a little more casual Wikipedians and don't see the normal backchannels, Sadads (talk) 09:30, 9 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
We'd be happy to have you help out if you're interested. Feel free to sign up on the members' list for any announcements and to help out even if you're not in San Diego. I'll have to look into the GEONOTICE, I wasn't aware requests could be made. The BPOC staff indicated that instead of meeting in June, the best time for them would be in the first week of July on a weeknight. They would like to determine what our interests are to help find the right people and material for doing research. Any preferences for one of those nights? --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 05:47, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Presently Tuesdays work best for me, however my work situation is in flux lateral move/promotion/demotion/unknown, and I cannot guarantee that 100%, but it is my best answer at this time. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 07:15, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
That would work for me too. I'll see if the 5th or 12th would be best for them. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 06:22, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, they've changed me to TUE-SAT 0000-0900. Anything Tuesday during the day or afternoon then would be fine. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 00:34, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Alright, I told them Tuesday, we'll see how their schedule fits. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 05:50, 17 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
They can do Tuesday at 5:00. Several staff will be there along with some museum curators. They offered to get some pizzas so we can talk over dinner. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 03:59, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Which Tuesday? July 5th or 12th? Today (21 June 2011)? If it's on the 12th I shall try to endeavor to bring Crack wings.
Do we have an address?--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 00:04, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
July 5 and it's at the Sports Hall of Champions. Will clarify on specifics and create a page advertising the event soon. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 00:12, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hopefully, we can get more participants from WikiProject San Diego to join us. If it is only two wikipedia editors, they maybe disappointed. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 05:18, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

The location has changed to the SDASM, but it's still on July 5 at 5:00pm. I've created a page for the event, feel free to expand. I definitely would like to see a few more people sign up! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 02:14, 28 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hiya: one thing to note about the new location is that I'm really hoping the archivists will be able to give everyone a tour down in the shop. The shop is but one of their locations where the SDASM volunteers refurbish airplanes or build replicas. It's pretty cool, so I'd encourage everyone to make it if they can! One question - can we cross-pollinate the meeting with the WikiProject_San_Diego project? I'm not clear what the rules are surrounding events Isara (talk) 21:47, 28 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I already left a message on the talk page of WP:SAN for those interested to sign up for the event. Editors here are able to be part of both projects, it's not really that formal on here. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 01:31, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Image use

edit

Please take a look at the discussion linked here. It may garner more participants, and also help those other editors. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 09:06, 9 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Requesting images

edit

I see there is a list of images that were requested, with links provided. Does on just add an image, and if the people at Balboa Park, are able to assist, they provide it? For there are many historical images they may have in their archive which can enhance articles in the greater San Diego region.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 04:08, 10 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Right now, I set up the list to see what interest there was in the holdings of just the Air & Space Museum. Many of those images are likely already available under a free license, but we're going to have to research to make sure. The BPOC have expressed interest in providing images from other museums' holdings, but we need to meet with them to indicate what types of images we're looking for to add to various articles. Actually visiting the museums that house the archives would help in locating images that would specifically improve the many San Diego articles here. --Happy editing! Balboa Park for GA

edit

I've started a discussion over at Talk:Balboa Park (San Diego) for improving the article up to GA status. If anyone at Balboa Park has suggestions for improving the article and knows of sources that could be used to cite information in the article, please comment over there. --Happy editing! WP content to be "managed to benefit BP community's mission"?

edit

This, in the Activities section, gives cause for concern:

Analyze and manage content on Wikipedia to best benefit the missions of both the BP and the Wikipedia community.

WP is not a PR tool to "benefit" any "mission" of the "Balboa Park community". The encouragement to use it for that purpose should be removed. Writegeist (talk) 16:46, 23 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Although it could be interpreted that way, it appears the intent is to refer to the mutual goals of both parties to educate others and improve access to information. When setting up this page, I pulled from other GLAM projects, and this wording was seen on at least one other project. There's obviously no goal to solely do what BP or Wikipedia envisions, but rather to encourage a partnership to help both parties to meet goals together. If the wording appears confusing in its current context, is there a way that you feel would better convey it? --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 00:20, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Opposition to page move?

edit

Is there any opposition to moving these pages to reflect the full name of the organization (Balboa Park)? I think abbreviations should be reserved for redirects, and that way (when browsing categories or project pages) readers know which institution is being referred to? --Another Believer (Talk) 17:23, 16 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
