Cotton structure
editI was asked today about where I was taking the article cotton mill. It was difficult to answer. So after a bit of blue skies thinking I replied as follows.
Thats quite a big question. When I started the article it was in sheer frustration that there was nothing on the cotton industry- and all the articles on cotton had handy tips for the hobbyist. Excellent stuff but nothing industrial processing. To explain the mill, one had to describe the process and the Cotton mill article had to do all that, as there was nothing you could link to. Add to that the dearth of recent material- Lancashire had tried to bury the remains-- it was like a shameful big family secret. So as I found out more and more, it went into that article. When I wrote my first articles on individual mills they were deleted as not fulfilling Notability. That stage is over. We have recognition, and officially LCC has opened the doors. So where does that leave Cotton mill. To be honest I had no clear plan- where do you see it going?
So to put on my managers hat:
- There is an article Cotton (4000+ edits since 2002) that none of us save Richerman has contributed.
- cotton processing cycle, wool processing cycle, silk processing cycle, flax processing cycle and synthetic fibre processing cycle seem like interesting articles. Equally cotton industry, woollen industry, worsted industry and shoddy industry look like articles I would like to read. cotton processing cycle could c&p from cotton mill, and when that becomes a GA we could pare down that section in cotton mill. I don't think it is worth removing material until the linked article is at least a GA. Perhaps we should try to work cotton mill up to a GA first though.
- Cotton industry is far too large: a geographical split is needed. Cotton industry in Lancashire, Cotton industry in New England, Cotton industry in the Carolinas, Cotton industry in India, Cotton industry in China, Cotton industry in Egypt are all possible. All of these will no doubt spawn their own articles as well
- Now we come to the level on the individual mills, the individual machines, the individual tasks(see below), the individual manufacturers and the individual personalities. These are in some respects easiest, but regard must be made to make them cross fibre. The story so far is shown in the navbox on the article page.
- Back to the mills Cotton mill is principally about spinning mills, I have weaving sheds in my sandbox, we have also got combined mills- and nothing has been done on finishing processes, or making up. All tasks to-do.
Much of this is outside the scope of this project. I include it as a thought provoker and to generate discussion. It could, when modified, give a context to the project and illustrate its importance.
On the cotton mill page and else where- there is a template: {{Cotton processing flowchart}}. It shows each of the spinning processes- each one of these processes are links to articles that need to be written (maybe some of them have). I would like to see a similar template written for {{Cotton fabric manufacturing processes}} and {{Cotton fabric finishing processes}}. Again each of the boxes would need an article.

Speaking of the navbox, many of the articles are merely stubs (almost redlinks) and someone with better technical knowledge- access to better references needs to improve them, then a Wikipedian with better prose than me needs to copy ed the text. Flagging up the illustrations needed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ClemRutter (talk • contribs) 18:44, 13 March 2013
Burnley Loom
editThis article on the site 'Spinning the Web' says: "the "Burnley loom" was recognised as one of the best in the world". I've never been able to figure out if these where Lancashire looms made by Burnley manufacturers or a specific type in there own right. Can anyone enlighten me? --Trappedinburnley (talk) 14:22, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
November 2015- Museums closure announced
editMore details of Lancashire Councils decision to close its museums as a cost saving. This affects Helmshore and Queen Street, Judges Lodging etc. See Save the Mills action group blogspot. Ideas welcome. -- Clem Rutter (talk) 22:08, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
