Some observations
editRegarding the formalization of ethnicity (as a property of a person), arguments were being made both in favor of:
- Recording the ethnicity as per how the person identifies
- (Some seemed to favor doing this in contemporary categories and terms regardless of when the person in question was/is alive.)
- Reflecting reputable records, e.g. in libraries and museums
- (It was pointed out that these records avail themselves of the terms in use at the time.)
Regarding the didactics of Wikidata and a possible need for more specific teaching/training:
- Abstraction and the non-lingual/formalized nature of concepts/items/properties is generally not well understood.
- (reflected in widespread concern that items are missed in queries when “[the records are] not labeled with the right words”)
