NYC Wikipedia Day party/meeting

edit

Hi! As I was selected (drafted) to find a location I was thinking of doing it on Sunday January 17, 2010 in the Grand Central Terminal food court. Thoughts? —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 00:58, 20 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Can we find a place a little quieter? We had the Wikis Subway lunch there (Brad, Daniel Case, Pharos and I), I suggest a quieter place.Mitch32(A fortune in fabulous articles can be yours!) 02:10, 20 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Maybe, but it is a bit noisy and I'm not sure how we could accommodate a big group seated together there. What would be great is if we could find something that we could promote to a bunch of non-Wikipedians as a "Welcome to Wikipedia"-type party.--Pharos (talk) 17:29, 22 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've started talking to the Free Culture folks about possibly getting a lounge-type area at NYU for the Wikipedia Day party. What's the thought on this?--Pharos (talk) 17:07, 23 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
If the school doesn't have a problem with people bringing in food I suppose we could set up a potluck. On the other hand GCT has many food vendors and it's likely to be quieter on a Sunday than it was on the Monday of the Subways event. The best option would be for someone to volunteer to host at their residence - I'd do it myself but my studio isn't big enough. Maybe we should link to this discussion on the email list? P.S. I've already got a great idea for a cake! —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 22:11, 23 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I went to the Free Culture NYU meeting last night, and they think Sunday January 24 might work best (though they could probably attract more students on a weeknight), and they're actively scouting out some possible locations on campus (ideally a lounge-type area suitable for a party, with couches etc). Bringing in food should not be a problem at all. The cake, btw, sounds like a delicious idea; Seconded!--Pharos (talk) 15:08, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I didn't know that NYU has a campus :) Tim Song (talk) 15:18, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

(Outdenting) How many simultaneous open space meetings are we going to allow for? Don't we need a room for each? Someone said on the project page that we'll have enough room for 100 participants. Is this realistic or would it be better to picture just a coffee-klatch? --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 18:10, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

More realistic would probably be 50-60 or so, and I might adjust that on the front side. We're going to aim for a large space that has several subrooms, so that we can accommodate multiple open space meetings in the evening.--Pharos (talk) 00:01, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just a note, on Wikipedia Day itself (the 15th) i'll be making a pub crawl through Greenwich Village to commemorate my 21st birthday, which is the same day (yes, I was born on Wikipedia Day). If any Wikipedians want to join me, contact me.

What exactly do we do at a Wikipedia Day party?

edit

We may be the first people to actually celebrate Wikipedia Day in person, so I guess now is our opportunity for inventing some venerable traditions. I was thinking maybe pizza and potluck, a mini-unconference, public presentations to newbies on "Welcome to Wikipedia" and perhaps on "Cool stuff you can do with the chapter", and maybe steal some stuff from past Wikimanias. And perhaps scrabble/quizbowl/puzzley things. Oh, and cake! Any other ideas?--Pharos (talk) 18:02, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

My idea for the cake is to have an "Edit this cake" page of which a screen shot can be taken of and printed on a real cake! —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 17:32, 27 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK folks, I've tried my hand at a basic event description, and an initial draft of a schedule. The idea behind the schedule is to try to appeal more to the general public, though I guess we would modify things a bit depending on who turns up. What's the thought on this?--Pharos (talk) 05:41, 3 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

TEDxNYED

edit

There is a TEDx event (focused on education) on March 6 in NYC - http://tedxnyed.com/. I think this is very much relevant to Wikimedia and what the NYC chapter is doing, and encourage at least someone from the chapter to apply to participate. --Aude (talk) 01:16, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

It would be great to start seeing some of people's lightning talk and open space ideas.--Pharos (talk) 00:07, 15 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Date, Time and Place?

edit

Have you confirmed the date as January 24th? If so, someone should remove the (date awaiting final confirmation) from the lead and, while you're at it, mention the time we'll be starting. Also, will the meeting take place in Vanderbilt Hall or somewhere else. --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 22:18, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry we were delayed in finalizing the details. All the information should be up now :)--Pharos (talk) 03:51, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am ordering the pizza for fair warning tomorrow

edit

Do we have ideas for three different types of pizza? Cheese, ________ & _________. I ask so we can have a little different choice. My thoughts are Cheese, Pepperoni and Veggie. If you want to give ideas, post here or post on my talk.Mitch32(Live from the Bob Barker Studio at CBS in Hollywood. Its Mitch!) 01:05, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

How about half Pepperoni, half Sausage? And maybe half Veggie and half a really wild one, like Hawaiian or Banana Peppers? --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 02:26, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, I temp ordered Pepperoni, Veggie and Cheese, we'll see tomorrow.Mitch32(Live from the Bob Barker Studio at CBS in Hollywood. Its Mitch!) 02:35, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
