Strategy
editGet as many candidates as possible, and if we get to the point where we might be able to fill every day completely, we can start being picky. Kees08 (Talk) 06:46, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Coffeeandcrumbs: Looks like we could run eight hooks for a full day? If we are only doing one day, I would like it to be a day of firsts, specifically for the space race. This is an example list and can be modified. Most or all would have to become GAs to qualify, which should not be too hard to accomplish, as long as we decide ahead of time and I (and hopefully others) can get to work on it. Thoughts? Kees08 (Talk) 06:10, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- There was a list here that was moved to the project namespace.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 11:47, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Kees08: That looks like a perfect list to me. Frank Borman for Apollo 8 would be the obvious choice. Actually we can do two sets of DYK but let's focus on these first.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 06:25, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Sounds good, I will keep my primary focus on Aldrin and Collins, since I believe Hawkeye7 will be taking care of Apollo 11. I will continue to curate my library to support making all of these Good Articles in the mean time. Feel free to copy edit or clean up citations on any of the articles, if you have time. Kees08 (Talk) 06:30, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Another option is Apollo–Soyuz Test Project – the first joint mission between the United States and the Soviet Union.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 05:04, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- Good idea! My plan was to only have 'firsts' that occurred prior to the lunar landing, but at this point I will take what I can get. I have been quietly collecting sources on Zond 5 and Félicette, so those should not be problems, but the other five that need to be written will be challenging to complete. PS, I was thinking of starting all the DYK's with '...that the first", but if you think that is dumb we do not have to. Kees08 (Talk) 05:35, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- That could work.
"that the first joint mission between the United States and the Soviet Union had the Americans speaking Russian and the Russians responding in English?"
Cool right? I am collecting sources on the Russians. I have collect close half a dozen books. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 08:25, 9 March 2019 (UTC) - I am going to start with Leonov then Tereshkova. Maybe Hawkeye7 can do Gemini 8. We can all then gang up on Gagarin and Luna 2. Borman is still a possible alternate. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 08:31, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

@Coffeeandcrumbs: I have an idea! Armstrong will be TFA, Aldrin can be bold-linked at TFP, so why don't we DYK Collins when his FAC goes through? We would of course have to remove one of the above. The list right now is predominantly Soviet, so maybe we remove one of them? Maybe we just list nine here for now and see what we do not get done. Kees08 (Talk) 16:35, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, we could put Apollo 11 at OTD. Let's move Gemini 8 to backup position. I don't think we can spare any of the others. I know the DYK will be mostly Russians but the rest of the Main Page will be American. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 17:09, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
@Randy Kryn: I noticed you were at least a little interested in some of the work I have been doing; we are planning a special front page for the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing. If you have any interest in working on any of these articles, even just to copyedit, fix references, etc, I would appreciate the help. Kees08 (Talk) 22:28, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
- Of course, great work on some of these interesting topics (Zond 5 fanboy here). Thanks for the ping, and will watch this page. The front page is a good idea, and I could imagine some of the "...did you know" entries. Was actually poking a stick around Alexi Leonov's pages earlier. Randy Kryn (talk) 23:33, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
- Kees, you beat me to it. Randy, WELCOME!! I am glad you mentioned Alexei Leonov. I have copied the page to my user sand box User:Coffeeandcrumbs/Alexei Leonov. I think it would easier to do a 5× expansion than a GA to qualify for DYK. We should expand it there and dump it on the Main Page all at once.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 02:54, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
Some other firsts:
- There was a list here that was moved to the project namespace.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 11:47, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
Just in case.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 02:58, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
@Coffeeandcrumbs: Zond 5 should be good for DYK nomination now; I will make sure to take care of your comment at the talk page. I can try to formulate the RfC at DYK, I have not done one either but should not be too much of a trouble. Kees08 (Talk) 05:11, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Kees08: Already nominated Zond 5. I am also going to nominate Buzz Aldrin for DYK. Having Buzz linked at POTD is OK but then we would not have a photo of him. A better idea is:
- Armstrong at TFA
- Collins and then Aldrin at DYK for 12 hours each. Both Collins and Aldrin will have the photo spot with 7 other hooks
- That gives us 14 other DYK slots to fill. We already have two: Sputnik 1 and Maspalomas Station and maybe even Roger B. Chaffee. If we build it, they will come. I had no idea about the Maspalomas Station nomination
- The Bootprint at POTD can link to Mare Tranquillitatis since it is literally photo the moon surface.
- Apollo 11 can be at OTD.
Maybe we should wait till I have Zond 5 approved and Buzz partially approved before proposing an RfC.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 05:38, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
- Scratch that. Buzz Aldrin has already appeared at DYK. Maybe his photo can be part of the TFL.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 05:45, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
- Can we use Aldrin's photo at OTD? Kees08 (Talk) 05:47, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
- Sure that works. If you want to create the RfC now go ahead. It probably best to include this preliminary plan in the RfC.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 05:57, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Coffeeandcrumbs: What do you think of replacing Leonov with the ground station article? I don't think we can remove Tereshkova or Gagarin, Sputnik and Zond are already done..we could maybe replace Luna 2 but I have done a lot of work on it already. I was hoping to keep Felicette to show people the space race initially was not just between two countries. Thoughts on that? Kees08 (Talk) 16:33, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
- OK. Move to backup list for now. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 16:37, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Also, would you be able to sort out OTD? Have Aldrin as the lead image, and maybe try to have space-related things that occurred on that day, but that is probably a little difficult. Kees08 (Talk) 16:38, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
- I do not understand the DYK approval workflow too well; is Zond 5 approved? It looks like it..making sure. Also, let me know if you are able to handle the OTD scheduling. Kees08 (Talk) 19:19, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, it's good to go. I will move it to the proper places.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 21:20, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- And yes, I will handle recruiting OTD in about a week. I want to see strong support for DYK before approaching Howcheng.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 21:23, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Coffeeandcrumbs: Per this diff, you might want to nominate Collins for DYK. As an aside, Charles Bassett just passed GA and could be a DYK for one of the other mission days. Kees08 (Talk) 01:18, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- GOT IT! I will nominate both. Are you happy with our current working model? I promise I will take a few of these Russian GANs on my shoulders as well. I am reading and highlighting several books now to rewrite Gagarin, Leonov, and Tereshkova. I am confident I can get those to GA. I am just getting used to the GA process. For now, I am best suited to handle the DYKs. But I don't want you to feel like you have to much to do. We are making great progress in my opinion. I am certain that if we get to 4 or 5 DYKs completed, contributors are going to appear out of nowhere to help us.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 01:32, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- I really do not want to do the DYK nomination process, so I am very happy that you at least do not mind it, and maybe even enjoy it! I do not feel excessive pressure; if we get them done great, if not then we tried. I just received (literally a couple minutes ago) Sputnik and the Soviet Space Challenge and plan to use that to expand Gagarin's article significantly. I welcome any edits or sources that you have, whenever you feel comfortable editing those pages. I also do not mind if you want to edit the articles we already made GAs, I was about to expand Zond 5 further before I saw this book came in. Kees08 (Talk) 01:37, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Kees08: Collins is nominated but the hook I chose needs sources for verification in the article.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 11:54, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Should we edit the Saturn V article? NMilstien 00:51, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- That would certainly make a good nomination for GAC. Feel free to jump in. But it might be easier to work on a shorter article. It is very difficult to get a long article to pass WP:Good article criteria. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 11:47, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- You should try one of the articles on the "Preliminary list here" (near top of the page).--- Coffeeandcrumbs 11:54, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
You can request a date for the Next Nine on my behalf (Hawkeye7 asked if I preferred a date). Kees08 (Talk) 04:54, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Welcome new editors
editI would like to take part, but I'm new to wikipedia. How do I join and take part? -- NMilstein 3:12, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- @NMilstein: Welcome!!! I cannot tell you how happy I am to see you here! Give me a moment to put together some pages you may be interested in editing. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 01:32, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

edit@Kees08: Can you make a similar announcement at WikiProject Spaceflight like I did at OTD and WPWIR. We may need more help on the Russian articles. I am hoping we recruit a Russian editor but any additional editors we can find to work on this is a good idea. We now have a good plan and its good we kept this to a few people while we developed a strategy. However, I think it is time to ramp up our efforts.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 23:24, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
- Sounds good; done. Kees08 (Talk) 05:06, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Kees08: if you have time, I could use your help at Mae Jemison's GA review. I also nominated Margaret Hamilton (scientist) if you have time to do the review itself. As you are no doubt aware, Yuri Gagarin is up for GA as well but you have already significantly contributed to that page so we have to wait for another review. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 00:05, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry for not helping, had some other article commitments that got in the way (A-class/FAC). I will probably work on Luna 2/Gagarin/Tereshkova soon. Kees08 (Talk) 04:46, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
- No problem. I stalk your talk page so I knew where you were. I don't think we have enough time for Tereshkova, sadly. Mae Jemison became my first GA!!! She will have to do to represent women. We should focus on Felicette, Luna 2, and Gagarin. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 05:16, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
- I will be primarily working on Tereshkova but have a lot of resources on Gagarin, so if anything needs clarification or additional detail as a result of the review just let me know. Kees08 (Talk) 17:30, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Kees08: Please see if you have any sources for the citations needed. They are mostly in §Tributes and the first para of §Statues. I have Valentina's autobiographical The 'First Lady of Space': In Her Own Words and several other books on her if you need any help. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 21:25, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
- I saw a review that said it read like propaganda (which is what Yuri's autobiography was). Have you had a chance to read it and did you get that impression? I will do what I can on Gagarin's article, I put a lot of work into those sections though so some things might have to be removed. Kees08 (Talk) 22:05, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
- After a quick read of the 30 pages of her "autobiography", I can confirm it is propaganda which still insists that she landed her craft. It was translated and published in a journal called "Quest: The History of Spaceflight Quarterly" with a preface written by the publisher (I believe) that may be useful. But it is probably better to use other sources. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 18:07, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

Kind of a side thing, but do you like nominating featured pictures? I find pictures that would probably pass often, but I never feel like nominating. I can pass them along to you if it is something you like doing. As for this project, I received two more Soviet spaceflight books today so I hope to shore up Gagarin/Tereshkova's articles today. Kees08 (Talk) 18:49, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Kees08: I would be happy to nominate any FP. Just ping me. I think Gagarin should pass GA now. On to Valentina! --- Coffeeandcrumbs 18:07, 16 June 2019 (UTC)
- Granted I have not looked super closely, but I was impressed at a glance at the awards and honors sections, as well as writing about the 'he didn't technically land in the spacecraft' controversy. I have a mental list of things that we would need to address prior to A-class nomination, I will list them on Gagarin's talk page once the GA has concluded. Kees08 (Talk) 18:22, 16 June 2019 (UTC)
