Please indicate, before 23:59 UTC Saturday, your top three preferences in order: your top pick first, then your second choice, and then your third. These will be allocated 3, 2, and 1 points respectively, and the most popular article (with the most points) will be added to the scheduled for week 13 of 2015. Articles receiving 3 points or less will be archived.

  • I have added the numbers because I just don't have enough time to add the articles.

We should select the top two articles from this week's vote - at the moment we only have one week (other than the current TAFI) scheduled, which is cutting it a bit fine if something goes wrong for whatever reason - Evad37 [talk] 12:15, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

How to calculate prose?

I just use all the words in an article without the titles, captions, the see also's and external links. Is this how you count prose? Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 03:09, 15 March 2015 (UTC)

Simplify accomplishments page?

Is there really any need for the Accomplishments page to be so detailed, and require so much manual work to update? What is the actual point of it? Perhaps we could simplify it to just the week/date and article, with permanent links to the old version and improved version (and perhaps also a diff of the improvement). It would save a lot of work (or blank data if the work isn't done), given that realistically the chances of a bot doing the work is very remote – but this would retain enough data should a bot or other (semi/)automated process ever be coded. - Evad37 [talk] 00:24, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Didn't I make a suggestion about analyzing the oldids and diffs in each week's row and the bot solving the rest of the data? I suggest that it should work on all templates that say {{Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement/Accomplishments/row}}. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 03:16, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Suggestions about bots are one thing; actually getting anyone to code a bot is something else. Most of our past requests, and all requests since at least 2013, have not resulted in anything. Multiple requests for comparatively simple tasks go completely unanswered, or are archived with no meaningful response. If nobody with the skills and resources to make use a bot wants to do so, then we aren't going to get any bots. - Evad37 [talk] 03:29, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Convert TAFI nominations page to a general notice board

Notifying: @Buster7, Northamerica1000, NickPenguin, Whiteghost.ink, Ypnypn, Madalibi, Moswento, Kvng, Coin945, Mark Miller, Evad37, Buffbills7701, GiantSnowman, EMachine03, EuroCarGT, CSJJ104, Iselilja, Khamar [ping list 1 of 2: edit] Notifying: @Finnusertop, Tomásdearg92, CSJJ104, Davey2010, Stuartyeates, Gongshow, Jim Carter - Public, SL93, MrWooHoo, The boss 1998, Qwertyxp2000, Bananasoldier, Rcsprinter123, Epicgenius [ping list 2 of 2: edit]

An idea that would improve both the TAFI project and Wikipedia is to make some adjustments to the TAFI Nominations page that would also allow it to also function as a general noticeboard where people can post articles they would like to see improved. The !voting process could remain in place as it presently exists for the project's weekly selection. I notice that Wikipedia presently does not have any discussion board for general article improvement suggestions and collaboration. It seems that creating such a space would better-enable article improvements.

We have forums such as Articles for deletion and the Article Rescue Squadron project, which deal in articles for deletion, and WikiProject Cleanup, which deals in cleanup matters, but no other general notice board anywhere on Wikipedia where people can post articles for improvement. The Wikipedia:Articles for Improvement page never really gained any traction, so elements of that former project could be incorporated into the TAFI nominations page.

The project name could be changed to Wikipedia:Articles for improvement, omitting the "today's" part, which would facilitate this notion. Links to the newly-formatted page could be placed in various places on Wikipedia to notify people about it and encourage participation.

  •   Like. Support as nominator. NORTH AMERICA1000 22:42, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
  • I agree with your general sentiments; for the project to continue to successfully improve articles, some things about it's nature must change. I support any well thought out steps taken to streamline the project process, and to promote greater participation. --NickPenguin(contribs) 06:51, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Well, I agree on the need for a general noticeboard but I would prefer the TAFI name to still be there. We could always add a link in WP:TAFINOM about general discussion. This is all I would say should be different. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 00:08, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
  • A noticeboard would be good, but the nominations page is already comparatively cluttered and it might not be desirable to add complexity as this might desuade people from nominating articles, or even participating in general discussion, if there is any confusion to them about what counts as what. Perhaps Wikipedia:TAFIFC would be a better alternative for such changes? --CSJJ104 (talk) 00:43, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Interesting ideas, but we should try to figure out why WP:AFI didn't work before, and what we can change about the process – no point making the same mistakes again if we can avoid them - Evad37 [talk] 01:41, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Evad37: It's likely that WP:AFI didn't function due to a lack of links to it on WikiProject and other pages. Check out what links here for the page. Notice how it's mostly listed on talk pages, rather than WikiProject and Wikipedia namespace pages. Nobody knew about its existence, so it didn't function. • Its a good idea, just like the education program noticeboard, where everything in general, is centralized in one page. However as CSJJ104 stated, the page will be high in volume and will be lengthy as looking at all the current pages for TAFI, all are long and lengthy, so the page will be very cluttered. ///EuroCarGT 03:20, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
  • I think it's a great idea, It's a shame it failed the first time, Perhaps If it was a similar set up to AFD (Headers, Short reason for wanting it improved) it could work? (With WP:AFI I'm not so keen on everything being a table), All that aside I think it's a great idea :) –Davey2010Talk 04:16, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Let's get down to work

I think there has been too much focus on the behind-the-scenes aspects of this project, and not enough focus on actually improving articles. It's interesting that those who vote for an article rarely edit it... It makes me wonder of people are choosing the best articles if they don't feel compelled to get involved. TAFI is never going to work unless we collectively improve these core articles. Our successes of the past - Sea, Entertainment, Solar activity - all got to where they are because of the collective ends out of or participants. That was the whole reason we created it in the first place. Please stop all this madness with making the backlog of nominations bigger and bigger and let's hit that "Edit" button.--Coin945 (talk) 03:54, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

TAFI doesn't even use WP:TAFIFC. Why are they not even using that Further Collaboration page when it is just sitting there like a ghost town? We should convert the Further Collaboration page into an AFI sort of page. 122.59.45.246 (talk) 08:27, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
Perhaps expansion into a general noticeboard, while retaining its present features as a place for project collaboration, would be in order. It could work out rather nicely, and also provide Wikipedian's with a general board to post articles for improvement. NORTH AMERICA1000 05:06, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Received it this time. Sometimes when others post the ping list (as opposed to myself, as it seems that Wikipedia:Notifications doesn't ping oneself), it's not received. It seems to be hit and miss with the notifications system. North America1000 01:11, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
The notifications system is quite finicky because they want to prevent unintended, accidental notifications being sent. There is a maximum of 20 pings that can be sent at once, otherwise none are sent (to prevent mass notifications from accidental transclusions of pages) so {{TAFI ping list|1}} and {{TAFI ping list|2}} HAVE to be saved in separate edits. Each edit has to be signed with ~~~~ , as pings are not sent without signatures. Each edit has to look like a new message (start on a new line) as no pings will be sent if the system thinks you are just editing your previous message. I suspect that there may also be a time factor, so that the two edits might have to be a minute or two apart. - Evad37 [talk] 01:27, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

Too many nominations!

With the amount of nominations we are getting we're simply created a never-ending backlog, which would be alright if not for the fact that it's also ever-increasing. The result is that once we're at the next round it might have been several years since the article was listed – which may mean the article is already out of scope of TAFI or otherwise inapplicable. We really need to do something about this or TAFI will fail completely. -- CFCF 🍌 (email) 10:39, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

I agree, but I don't see a solution. Other than receiving fewer nominations. Rcsprinter123 (chinwag) @ 15:48, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
@CFCF: By the way, are there any nominations in the holding area that you reckon should not be there? Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 21:32, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
ever-increasing – Well that's just not true. The holding area currently has 320 articles. It had 341 in January 2015 [1], 352 in October 2014 [2], 325 in July 2014 [3], and 323 in March 2014 [4]. I'm not saying we can't do better, but the situation isn't so desperate since the backlog is relatively steady, not ever-increasing. - Evad37 [talk] 23:08, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
The TAFI project used to have several articles for improvement selected on a weekly basis, ten at a time, if I'm not mistaken. Hence the word "articles" in the project's name, instead of the singular "article". Rather than limiting nominations, which would set unnecessary restrictions on editor input, an idea is to pick more than one article per week, as existed before.NORTH AMERICA1000 22:20, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
EXCELLENT IDEA!!! Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 00:11, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
On the subject of holding area size, I would point out at least one article, Scottish mythology, appears in the list twice. If TAFI were to adopt a system of having more than one article a week, what steps could\should be taken to create variety in topics? I recall a previous suggestion of having one article per category listed on the nominations page. I feel this might help to retain active members, as there is more likely to be a topic they're interested in week-on-week. If 12 at once is too much, then perhaps related (where possible) topics could be paired together, and each pair alternated? E.g. one week a mathematics article, next week science and technology article. --CSJJ104 (talk) 00:20, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
I removed the duplicate entry for Scottish mythology from the holding area page. There is now only one entry for it there. North America1000 17:16, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Next week

So, for next week, should we switch over to voting on nominated articles instead of holding area articles? If so, we should stop the archiving of nominations, adjust the instructions there accordingly, and nominate some more articles. - Evad37 [talk] 04:58, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

Maybe not at this time. The nominations page is quite sparse, with only six valid entries at this time (not including unapproved ones still on the list). It may be better to continue voting here for five a week based upon the holding area list. We're receiving nice input with the current system, but interest may wane if there are only six entries, and potentially even less, for people to choose from. New project proposals

  • Proposal – We presently have 308 entries in the Holding area, which equates to a backlog of over five years of articles under the present system of scheduling only one article per week (when not including entries that are archived). I propose that we boldly begin to schedule the top five articles per week starting this week, which would reduce the backlog to approximately 1.18 years (again, when not including entries that are archived). By creating a pool of weekly articles, it's also hopeful that having a variety to choose from will appeal to a greater amount of editors. North America1000 00:54, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Hi Evad37 and Winner 42: I had actually considered three, but this would equate to a two year backlog (not counting archived entries). While I agree that article improvement is what it's all about, I feel that five per week can still accomplish this. Reasons include that people will naturally gravitate to articles they like, which will hopefully result in more overall article improvements, and that reducing the backlog will keep the project flowing more smoothly. North America1000 02:07, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Given the size of Wikipedia compared to the number of featured and good articles, there is always going to be a backlog of articles needing improvement, whether enumerated in our holding area or not. Having a large list to schedule from isn't really a problem (WP:NODEADLINE), but I am willing to see how having extra articles each week goes. I guess I just remember when we had 10 articles per week and some didn't really get many more edits than adding and removing the TAFI banner. But like I said, I would be willing to give it a try and see how it goes. - Evad37 [talk] 02:35, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Addendum: Since voting under the three-choice system has already begun, the shift to five as per the above would have to begin next week, with instructions that people indicate their top five choices. Statistically, the present three choices system isn't functional for a five-per-week voting process. North America1000 03:11, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Another idea (in addition to the above) – I haven't quite worked out the details, but the idea would be to focus the weekly !voting around nominations, perhaps a subset of 10 or so. The holding area would just be for holding selected articles, which could then be scheduled – perhaps randomly, or in order, or some combination (eg. 1 or 2 from the top of the list, plus the rest for that week via random selection). That would help sustain activity in the nominations area, and the project can be streamlined by only voting/commenting on articles just once, at the nomination stage, rather than again to progress them from the holding area. - Evad37 [talk] 02:19, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Evad37: This type of thing could be quite functional. Under this scenario, I would be for scheduling ten articles weekly, all of which would be done randomly. After that, they would be archived. Coordinating the weekly vote on the nomination page instead of on this talk page would be rather easy to perform. I also like the notion of articles being voted upon once, rather than recurringly for those that are archived. North America1000 02:28, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
  • The above (ten per week) would also reduce the present backlog in the holding area to 6 months, and would shift the project's focus to the nominations page. More focus on the nom page would be beneficial to keep the project moving along, in my opinion. North America1000 02:37, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
  • I think it would be better to start off with 5 per week, which was generally supported above, and then review it after six to eight weeks to see whether we should it should increase, decrease, or stay the same - Evad37 [talk] 02:43, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Support - Five. . Buster Seven Talk 09:57, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Another idea - maybe every month we do a talk page proposal of which articles to remove from the Holding Area due to the fact that either they are already developed enough, or others, like the other talk page proposal in the talk page archive. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 04:48, 9 May 2015 (UTC)

@Evad37 and Northamerica1000: Have you updated the archive to show the changes to the way for schedule archival? This is pretty high priority too. (But highest priority of all is the improvement of aritcles) Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 09:49, 10 May 2015 (UTC)
