Target

500 would be more likely to reach the target, and there is nothing wrong if we do a little better and exceed the target. It might take a bit to grow to something on the scale of WP:WAM, which has a broader scope beyond cinema, and is heavily promoted in many language Wikipedias.--Pharos (talk) 17:30, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

Yeah. I think changing to 500 is more realistic. But did you just say most WP online edit-a-thons have a 10k article target? I find that hard to believe because even the highly publicized and successful Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon had a 2k target. Some Statistics for Nigerian cinema

Hello. I'll like to know the total number of Nigerian films and actors on Wikipedia before the contest. I know Wikidata does this easily but the result I was getting was so inaccurate, probably because the appropriate properties are not present in the items (actors and films) or they haven't even been added to WD. I believe using categories will provide a more accurate result but the presence of so many subcategories is making it more tedious for me to navigate. Perhaps, someone with an understanding to use a gadget for this? The reason I want to know this is to work towards at least 10% increase for Nigerian cinema, and measure the impact of the contest to Nigerian cinema. Regards. Thanks Pharos. This was what I needed. I had used it once in the past, but didn't know what it was or how to get there. To be honest, seeing X-Men Origins in the list kindof discouraged me, but this should be at least 98% accurate for me. You mistakenly used "Nigerian films" for both petscan queries above. WikiData

I would like to propose the following. It so happens that Wiki Loves Women group intends to work on WikiData in October/November. Practically speaking, what I intend to do is to generate rather simple queries for a collection of countries. Outcome should be to display some parameters available in wikidata entries for biographies of African women (I am currently thinking of full name, description, country, data of birth, occupation, and wikipedia article. The query make it possible to see where the information is missing, and thus... invite participants to fill in the gaps (eg, adding the date of birth of a women wikidata entry when it is missing). The outcome is not creation of new entries in wikidata, it is rather improving wikidata entries (consider it a wikidata Destubathon :))))

An example of such a query may be found here : [1] This is the query for Ivory Coast, with French wikipedia sourcing.

Note that if we limit ourselves to those mandatory parameters (dob etc.)...the number of entries per country is not so big. 300 overall for CI. And most of them are actually complete. I am currently exploring to see how I could get the results only keeping entries where a parameter is missing. Hoping to know how to do that very soon :)

Here is my proposition

• I create for you a query that would include many countries, but only focus on wikidata entries where the occupation is related to cinema. Of course, it would need a definition (imperfect by nature) of what defines someone African... easiest way would be to pick up people born in African country or people citizen of an African country. Obviously, it misses a lot of people (eg, the afroamericans), but I am not sure how to identify those ones on wikidata... It is imperfect, but better than nothing. Let's say "anyone born in an African country"
• Then a call is made, to either improve entries... or add new entries. Measuring effectiveness for new entries is fairly easy (count the number of initial entries. Then counts the final entries). Measuring effectiveness for improved entries is a bit more complicated (% of completed entries ?)
• For individual tracking, the best is that people take the time of listing on which entries they worked. I am not willing to track that by hand myself ;)
• We can promote the event on the WLW social media
• It would be a sub part of our WikiData drive this fall
• That "WikiData push" for African women in cinema would be part of your contest. It should be mentionned as done in collaboration with Wiki Loves Women (pretty much in the same way than done for the Destubathon with James)
• I can pretty much work on the queries and presentation myself. This week-end probably. I am travelling the next two days.

AnthereLet me start by saying thank you taking out time to seek ways to further promote this project. You've always been a blessing to emerging/under-represented communities on Wikimedia. I'm happy to hear something like this is happening in October/November this is because I am also be a part of a Wikidata traning being organized by Wikimedia hub, Ibadan within the same time frame, specifically November 21. It is interesting to note that two of the persons organizing this event are also ladies/women. However, the plan is mainly to train students irrespective of gender on how to contribute to Wikidata and massively contribute to Nigerian cinema Wikidata entries (depends on the number of persons that showup).I feel like wikidata is easier to understand than Wikipedia, so hopefully all of the participants will understand. For my presentation, I already prepared the following basic queries that I will be using for my presentation:

• lists all Nigerian actors
• Nigerian actors born today
• List of Nigerian actors with an image in their entry
• List of Nigerian actors without an image in their entry
• Nigerian actors and their birthplaces in a map
• Universities nigerian actors/actress attend illustrated on a map
• Number of Nigerian films between 2010-2018
• List of Nigerian films produced between 2010 and 2018

Concerning your propositions:

• Place of birth might not be enough as a considerable number of African actors are lacking that statement in their article but if its the best available option then I guess it will be great. If it can be unionized withsome other statements, such as country of citizenship, etc.it will improve the accuracy of the query.
• I think this can be done the same way expanded stubs are treated on WP. If there is a significant increase in the size of the the WD item then it was probably improved.
• I'm sure we can work around this. If more persons are interested, I can go through the Nigerian ones.
• Smart idea, that will aslo further publicise the event

Article achievement entry

Since there are various categories for recognition for the contest, shouldn't there be a separate page for that? The page can contain the following as subsections: overall winner, country Winners, diversity winner, gender-gap fillers, page improvers, wikidata Translators, etc HandsomeBoy (talk) 11:05, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

The reason this might be helpful is that if all entries are uncategorized, it will be more tasking to determine who come tops for each specific category of recognition, especially if we have more participants/entries before November ending. But if you think the coordinators are up to the task of pulling everything out from one long list of articles, then you might not need this suggestion. I agree with you that maintenance could be a worry, we can start to consider the suggestion when there is a chance of the list getting bigger at a faster rate. Presently, it can easily be assessed for articles that meets each recognition category. What we can do to curtail the workload is to provide a link to the entries page on the article achievement section that will suggest to the participant to also include their article in the appropriate section over there. That way, each article creator/contributor will share the burden. But for now, we can just leave everything as it is. HandsomeBoy (talk) 20:38, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Questions

I don't know a lot about African cinema (read nothing) but was probably contacted because intermittently work on improving articles about West Africa because I speak French and English Wikipedia really doesn't cover the area well at all. That said, I don't usually create new articles; I am an incrementalist that fixes bad machine translation and adds references and so on. Question one, are you counting that sort of work? Also, I took a look at the topic the other night and found the stubs I expected and fleshed some of them out a little. I think I saw a list of suggested articles and I could add the redlinks from those articles, but there are big historical articles that really should be written about social trends that affect the industry, such as every movie theatre in DR Congo being closed, and film-making being explicitly banned for 25 years. Is anyone else working on the French-speaking countries that I could talk to about these? Also, scope: I assume we aren't doing Hollywood films about Africa but the lines get blurry when it comes to France since so many expatriates live there. Any guidance on that? (For example see This is Congo). Thanks for any thoughts. I am busy and may not be able to do that much but I will try to help. Indeed, adding references totally fits into the kind of contributions needed. Also, expanding stubs also counts. Kindly, add such articles that you have worked on, in one way or another, to the article achievement lists on the contest page. Instead of writing "created by", you can write "destubbed by/expanded by/etc" instead. Also, translations from one language Wikipedia to another one also counts and should be listed.

Local edit-a-thon about African Cinema

Dear all,
I just wanted to make you aware about an edit-a-thon that will take place on November 6th in Tunis, Tunisia as part of the 2018 Carthage Film Festival. Local participants will be able to take pictures of attending personalities and develop articles related to the films presented during the festival but remote participants are more than welcome to contribute as well. Wikipedia meets Wikidata 2018 (phase 1)

As part of the activities for the AfroCine project a physical meetup was held at University of Ibadan on 23-24th of October 2018. Before the meeting, I spoke to the participants about the need to translate certain Wikidata items to Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa. I selected Kodili (Igbo), Surelaarrgh (Yoruba) and Albab4edu (Hausa). Unfortunately due to other engagements, most of them can only make the November meetup, nevertheless I was sent the translations in an Excel document as they couldn't do it themselves due to this being their first attempt at Wikidata. During the training, we were able to cover 159 articles, most of which were on Nigerian cinema and 21 editors joined the program. You can get more details from the training here and I have added some pictures and videos to our meta page here I'm posting here so this information can be added as one of the accomplishment of the inaugural AfroCine project. AfroCine: The Months of African Cinema Continues….

Greetings!

Thank you very much for signing up to participate in the Months of African Cinema global contest/edit-a-thon, and thank you for your contributions so far.

It is already the middle of the contest and a lot have been achieved already! We have been able to get over 200 articles created in over seven (7) languages! The figures soars to up to a thousand, if Wikidata entries are included. Looking ahead...

First of all, I want to appreciate everyone for taking out time to participate in this contest. Either by creating new articles, expanding/updating/wikifying existing ones, organizing off-wiki trainings and meetups, maintaining this page, etc. Your inputs were responsible for the success of this inaugural project. I want to drop my two cents concerning how I think we can make subsequent editions more successful:

• Be more specific about our goals: I understand the need to be as generic as possible, but I'm of the opinion that since we can make this a yearly thing, for us to have greater impact at each event, cutting across multiple facets of African cinema, then it will be more measurable if we decide what we really want to cover. Decisions such as: do we want the contest to be centered on creating new articles or destubbing existing ones or cleaning up low-quality ones? do we want to concentrate on English Wikipedia or all language Wikipedia? do we want to involve Wikidata contributions or only Wikipedia? needs to be pre-determined. We also need to run Wikidata queries (before and after the competition) inline with our area of concentration for the contest so as to sufficiently measure the impact it has had on the chosen project (whether en-wp or any other project).

• Have a minimum quality: Even though I can understand that any contest centered on the black continent will always have issues regarding online sources, especially from non-English speaking countries, but I still think we should set a minimum bar, it doesn't need to be a high one. Just something to avoid too many short sentences becoming articles. The minimum quality should cover both refereing and overall size of the article.

• Have an effective time frame for every activity: We need to have an agenda and follow it strictly irrespective of the situation or responses. I remember participating in one Nigerian contest in 2016 or 2017, till today I haven't gotten a feedback from the organizers. I believe displaying a high level of diligence can encourage some persons to participate.

• Have an achievement page: This has a psychological way of making participant continue to push. In the just concluded contest, I think I contributed about 20 articles, yet I don't know if I qualify for any of the prizes. If there was an achievement page, that will be clearer, and if I needed one article to qualify for a prize, I would have created it.

• If possible, let there be an off-wiki prize: I was told Wikimedia foundation does not want to give money for contest anymore, and I can understand the angle they are coming from. But the truth is the feeling that you'll win something is a motivator for any human being. It doesn't need to be money, or something elaborate. Just something to be won from being excellent in the contest is a huge plus.

As the entry page denotes, I'll rate this first edition about 70%. In my school, 70% is an "A". From the second edition in 2019, hopefully, we should be having "A+".

As I post this, I am also reflecting on it, as I'm one of the coordinators of the AfroCine movement. More importantly, I believe every Wikipedian has a part to play in improving the online visibility of notable AfroCine content on Wikipedia. HandsomeBoy (talk) 17:27, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.
