Collaboration

edit

Dear members, it has been almost a year since we formed this project. In recent days, many young Bangladeshi Wikipedians have joined us and showed their interest to work on different university articles. Some of them have already started working on the articles according to their interest. So, I think it's a perfect period for us to start a collaboration among us so that we can help each other in our wiki-editing.

I would like to request all of you to come and join this discussion, specially young wikipedians, to express your opinion and also to tell us on which articles you are currently working and what are the difficulties you are facing. We have some of the Wikipedia GURUs in our project (Ragib Bhaia, Arman Bhaia and junior but still I believe Guru, Nahid) who are always ready to help you by providing supports and guidelines. They are all extremely friendly and feel free to knock them whenever you want. And, last but not the least, if you feel like asking me any questions (though I don't consider myself as a GURU), you are always welcome! Cheers. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 13:22, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

The most important articles for collaboration could readily be the articles on Universities in Bangladesh and List of universities in Bangladesh. There could be a collaboration to rehash the tertiary education part in the article on Education in Bangladesh. And, of course, Dhaka University, the article on the oldest and largest university in Bangladesh can always be considered. Cheers. Aditya(talkcontribs) 14:44, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for initiating this discussion. I think the standard format for Bangladeshi Universities is already set that is obviously Rajshahi University, which is a FA. Now it is time to expand the other universities. I've started seven university articles and modified two university articles in great dealt. But all of them are stub class. I urged to senior wikipedians (GURUs) to please give some references other than which are already given in the articles. Then we can expand these articles easily. And these cases if we faces any problems then we can easily get help from our senior Wikipedians. The second thing is if they add some suggestions in every article talk page then it may be helpful. Thank you and specially thanks to Niaz bhaia for initiating this discussions. Tanvir che (talk) 15:45, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
First of all I would like to thank Aditya Bhaia and Tanvir for their quick response.
  1. I strongly believe Rajshahi University is the best article in our showcase but it is really hard to consider it as a Standard! It is because, RU, DU, BUET and other longest standing universities in Bangladesh are so rich in their history, art, architecture and alumni that young and newly established universities (both private and public) are in noway comparable with the same standard. We can consider RU as a standard to prepare DU, BUET, CU and other old public university articles but in case of new public and all private universities it will not work. For an example, even NSU, the oldest private university in Bangladesh, has not shifted in their own campus yet. So, discussion about Art and Architecture is absolutely pointless for private universities. Similarly, universities with 10-15 years old alumni groups are really too young to produce famous alumni. Thus, I think we should lower the bar for those universities in preparing their articles.
  2. Finding reference is another important issue, specially third party references. I think we can make this task easier by collecting references together. Such as, some-editor may be actively working in DU article but he'll collect references for BUET if he comes across such material in his day-to-day real life. He may add it at an appropriate place or request active editors of that article to add it where it is applicable.
  3. I strongly prefer group discussion among us so that we can find our faults. And we have to be tolerant and should listen to others' comments exclusive of seniority/juniority.
  4. We have almost finished List of universities in Bangladesh and I believe it is going to be another featured item for the mother/daughter projects. We have to put finishing touch on it now. Dhaka University article needs immediate concentration as it seems that no one is interested to work on it!
Finally, since Aditya Bhaia haven't joined this project so far, I didn't mention his name, but I personally believe he is one of the GURUs from Bangladesh and one of the most active editors in Bangladeshi university related articles. In fact, Nahid and Aditya Bhaia forms the most experienced pair for these articles. Cheers. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 16:25, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Bhaia for your suggestions. However, another important thing, Is the articles like Faculty of Arts, University of Dhaka, which I've started, is verifiable to this project? I strongly believe, for old universities e.g. University of Dhaka , these faculty articles should be created and should not merged with the universities main article.Tanvir che (talk) 17:37, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Niaz bhaia, after getting your mail from BD wiki Yahoo group I have added 15/12 URL and Foundation Date in List of universities in Bangladesh. But I faced some problems there: Foundation date NOT FOUND list: 1. Jessore University of Science and Technology (does this university exists/started functioning?) 2. America Bangladesh University (exists now?) Website NOT FOUND list: (they have no website) 1. Patuakhali Science and Technology University 2. Comilla University 3. Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University 4. Jesore University of Science and Technology (no wiki page) 5. Sylhet Agricultural University 6. America Bangladesh University 7. Central Women's University (is it exists now?) 8. Darul Ihsan University 9. Millennium University 10. University of South Asia, Bangladesh 11. Viqarunnisa University (exists?) What would be the actual foundation date of Jagannath University? Not clear. Is 2005 is ok? --Farsad (talk) 18:33, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Starting from the bottom!
  1. Thanks Farsad. It seems that you have taken WP very seriously. Keep this spirit up. As Nahid mentioned, don't worry about the universities who don't have their website right now. Sooner or later they will publish. But, about few universities such as America Bangladesh University, it is really hard to check their status. Even I read on newspaper that Government officially closed their activity but still they are operating! For the time being, just keep those institutions as it is. We'll check them later.
  2. Foundation day of Jagannath University is slightly tricky. It was a famous and old college but it was granted its university status few years back. Common practice is to count foundation from the day it receives university status. But, there are many controversial issues exist where foundation day is counted since when institution was founded. For an example you may have a look at University College London which was founded on 1826 but received its university status in 1836 which was taken away again in 1907 and returned in the form of Recognized body in 1978 and given own degree awarding power in 2006 and is now waiting for the separation from the University of London federation. Imperial College London is another example who never had degree awarding power until few years back, who never remained autonomous before 1978 but its foundation day is counted since 1907 when it was actually established. King's College London founded in 1829 is the 3rd university in England who received Royal Charter (university status) after University of Oxford and University of Cambridge but they don't consider themselves as third oldest and officially claimed 4th oldest reputation leaving 3rd oldest claim for University College London. Durham University was founded in 1832 but received its university status in 1837, though they claimed to be the 3rd oldest in England. There were long debate on those issues and finally an article was created on this topic! You may have a look here - Third oldest university in England debate. In addition, have a look at this talk page where you'll get to see many such debates, where I am personally involved on several occasions - Talk:King's College London. So, I prefer counting foundation day since when it started operating.
  3. Tanvir, you have already received your answer from Nahid. Let me just explain it further. WP encourages breaking long articles into parts. But, it should be done when that article reaches up to a certain size. Thus, initially we prefer to concentrate in the main article and then we will go for segmentations. King's College London is an article where I have been working for the last two years. It was a very messy article when I started working here but now it became a nice and well written article which I am going to place for GA review very soon. You may have a look at this article. At the bottom, we have placed a template where its segments are organized. In addition, they are also mentioned in the main body as main article.
I am sure, if we work together in this way, that day wont be very far when we'll have many FAs in our showcase. Cheers! -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 20:17, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Great to see that a collaboration has began to develop List of universities in Bangladesh, much of it visible on the FAC discussion. But, it still lacks participation from members of this project. Most importantly, This university and this university seems to be missing from the list. Is it possible to create article stubs for them, and put them where they belong in the list? Without them the list have little chance of passing through. Niaz and I have done some work already, but more hands will definitely be appreciated. If this one gets through, the project will proudly have its first Featured Content here. Aditya(talkcontribs) 15:24, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rajshahi University

edit

Rajshahi University has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here.

About this WikiProject

edit

This WikiProject has made some significant achievements by creating start class articles on almost every university of Bangladesh and getting one FL. However, the scope of this WikiProject always seemed too narrow to me. I also don't see much organized WikiProject-like activity (e.g. peer review, assessment, collaboration etc.) for this project. These activities could be managed much more efficiently if it were a workgroup under WikiProject Bangladesh, like History of Bangladesh workgroup or Geography of Bangladesh workgroup. Thus we could also consolidate the banners on article talk pages and synergize the strong assessment process that is already in place for the mother project. So I propose the followings:

  1. Let's formally make this a workgroup under WikiProject Bangladesh.
  2. Instead of just universities, let's name the workgroup: Education in Bangladesh workgroup.
  3. Let's widen the scope of the project / workgroup to include the followings:
    1. All educational institutions in Bangladesh (including schools, colleges and of course universities).
    2. Education system of Bangladesh (Major examinations, education boards, degrees offered etc.)
    3. Notable educators, academics and scholars from Bangladesh.
    4. Extracurricular activities in Bangladesh - scouting, BNCC, debating, computer programming, mathmetics competitions, painting competitions, recitation competitions, clubs etc.

Please let me know your comments. Arman (Talk) 03:00, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'd agree very much. But, there should be more voices in here as well. I am not even a member of this group. But, it worked alright for the History and Geography workgroups, both of which started out as separate wikiprojects. Aditya(talkcontribs) 06:14, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I do also agree with you. Actually when I created this project, at that time we were not as united as now. But now it becomes a necessity to organize articles properly and merging less active projects with the mother entity may help us to do this. And, transferring focus from university to all educational institutions would be a better idea to cover a broad area within a single workgroup. You may count me in with your proposal! -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 10:32, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Though I agree with the proposal of Education in Bangladesh workgroup but not agree with under the WikiProject Bangladesh. Bangladeshi Universities workgroup may go under the Education in Bangladesh project, but it should separate from the mother project. Thank you.Tanvir che (talk) 10:37, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Do you think we have a consensus here? With no more opinions coming through, and no other editors active, I believe, it is possible to wrap this up fine. Aditya(talkcontribs) 11:07, 30 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Shall I go forward with the necessary edits? Aditya(talkcontribs) 12:44, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

edit

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Modification of Infobox_University

edit

In the Infobox_University , there is no Pro Vice Chancellor and treasurer tag. Those tags are needed with respect to Bangladeshi universities. Adding those tag will be great. May be a different Infobox like Infobox_BD_Universities can be created. Today (25 February 2009) there are some changes of VC and ProVC in Bangladeshi universiites. I liked to update those in wiki but found that there is no pro VC tag in the infobox already exist. Pro VC is important to be mentioned in the infobox, I think. Looking forward. Cool BD 09:30, 25 February 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Coolbd (talkcontribs)

The problem is kind of solved by using the "head_label" tag. The head_label can be used 1 time for mentioning the pro vice chancellor. But it is better to have a pro vice chancellor tag. In addition to the pro vice chancellor and treasurer tag, the registrar tag is also required. Cool BD 06:18, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

edit

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 04:54, 28 February 2009 (UTC) Reply

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

NSU page

edit

Please guys have a look at the NSU page. Flooded with controversial news and references... I think it's your duty to ensure the quality of bangladeshi university pages... isn't it?? Now if you start writing about DU's controversial news, it would probably take a seperate page... same for NSU, JU, ... etc etc... But lets not act like blinds... this is our country.... we must protect each othjers' reputation equally... i have nothing else to say... i think people in the wiki project of bangldesh knows it better than me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nsuuser (talkcontribs) 13:29, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bangladeshi Universities articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

edit

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Bangladeshi Universities articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

edit

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject X is live!

edit

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

edit

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
