In the mid-1950s, a group of over 8,000 Shi'te clerics, including religious civilians who had ties to the Fada'iyan-e Islam forcefully purged by SAVAK, eventually outlawing the group by that time.

The tomb of Mahmud Hotaki was also another target of the mob's rage, being demolished and later becoming home to a public toilet.[4] The following census in 2011 counted 9,483 people in 2,458 households.[5] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 9,719 people in 2,866 households.[2]
