"¡Viva la libertad, carajo!", sometimes shortened to "¡VLLC!",[1] is a catchphrase and campaign rallying cry associated mostly with Javier Milei, the current president of Argentina and an outspoken libertarian and self-described anarcho-capitalist.[2] The phrase translates into English as, "Long Live Freedom, Damn It!",[3] or "Long Live Freedom, Goddamnit!".[4]
Origin and use
editThe catchphrase "¡Viva la libertad, carajo!" is a Spanish-language catchphrase initially popularized by political candidate Javier Milei[5][6] first in his parliamentary run in 2021[7] and then again in his run up to election in late 2023 as president of Argentina.[8][9]
Milei is known for his political antics including wielding chainsaws as props at political rallies and events, black-and-yellow flags associated with anarcho-capitalism,[10] and for his use of language such as "¡Viva la libertad, carajo!",[11][12][13][14][15] most often used as a concluding phrase to many speeches delivered by Milei.[16][17][18][19]
Milei has often used the phrase in captions in his social media posts with pictures of himself including those taken of himself with president-elect Donald Trump as well as other celebrities and personalities such as American actor Sylvester Stallone.[20][21][22]
Film and Television usage
editIn 2024 a six-part docuseries about Milei is currently titled, "¡Viva la libertad, carajo!"[23]
