editThe rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M originated in Austin in 1894 (October 19, 1894: Texas 38, Texas A&M 0), and the two teams met annually between 1915 and 2011.[2] Texas led the series 73–37-5, with the Aggies last win coming in a 24–17 over the Longhorns in Austin in 2010.[3]
This was the third Texas game with ESPN College Gameday onsite.[4]
Game Summary
editFirst quarter
editThe game started with defensive dominance by Texas, which made a key stop on a fourth-and-1 deep in their territory during Texas A&M's opening drive. Despite the Aggies moving the ball well early, a crucial interception by Michael Taaffe halted a promising Aggie drive near the end zone. Texas capitalized on this momentum later in the quarter, orchestrating a 93-yard drive that featured precise execution and a surprise package play. On fourth-and-2, freshman quarterback Arch Manning subbed in and dashed 15 yards for the game's first touchdown. While Quinn Ewers had a quiet first quarter, Manning’s contribution energized the Texas sideline.[5]
Second quarter
editTexas carried their offensive rhythm into the second quarter. An 80-yard drive culminated and pass from Ewers to Jaydon Blue for a 7-yard touchdown, doubled Texas’ lead. The Longhorns further extended their advantage with a 28-yard field goal by Bert Auburn just before halftime. Texas displayed a balanced attack, with Quintrevion Wisner contributing significantly in the run game, helping Texas control the clock and dictate the pace.[5]
Third quarter
editTexas A&M’s only highlight in the game, came in the third quarter when they intercepted Ewers and returned it for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 17-7. The Aggies’ defense stepped up, pressuring Texas and limiting their offensive production. However, their offense remained stagnant, unable to penetrate Texas’ disciplined defensive unit. Both teams settled into a defensive stalemate for much of the quarter, with neither offense able to gain substantial ground.[5]
Fourth quarter
editLate in the game, Texas A&M blocked a Texas punt, setting themselves up with excellent field position. However, the Longhorns' defense delivered yet again, making a crucial stand on fourth-and-goal to deny the Aggies any points. With under two minutes remaining, Trey Moore forced a fumble that Vernon Broughton recovered, effectively sealing the victory. The Longhorns' defense shone throughout the game, holding A&M to just 244 total yards and forcing multiple turnovers, underscoring their dominance and securing a 17-7 win that clinched their spot in the SEC Championship.[5]
