editThe 49th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on 31 December 1861.
The regiment was mustered out on September 9, 1865.
Total strength and casualties
editThe regiment suffered 7 officers and 72 enlisted men who were killed in action or mortally wounded and 5 officers and 170 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 254 fatalities.[1]
