Agustín Remiro (August 28, 1904, Epila – June 21, 1942, Madrid)[1] was a Spanish anarchist, CNT member and military leader during the Spanish Civil War.
Biography
editBorn into a peasant family to parents Santo Remiro Medina and María Manero Ibáñez, two farmers who had 12 children, 5 of whom survived.[2] At age 10, he left school to help his father and older brother with farm work, becoming self-taught.[2] He became an anarchist at age 15 and joined the CNT. He did two years of military service during the Rif War in Morocco and participated in underground anarchist organising in Épila during the Primo de Rivera dictatorship. He participated in the Anarchist insurrection of December 1933 and held the first civil wedding in Épila.[3] On January 26, 1941 he was arrested in Portugal by the Portugal political police, who then gave him to the Francoist police, and on April 27, 1942 he was sentenced to death. On June 21, 1942 he attempted an escape with other inmates, but was discovered by guards and was severely injured. He managed to escape to a nearby house where he then committed suicide by jumping out of a forth-floor window.[1]
