Early life and career

edit

Pinkerton was born and grew up in Scotland. He graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2001, and was an HMO landlord for a property in St Andrews between 2001 and 2005.[2][3] In 2006, he completed his PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London under the supervision of Klaus Dodds.[4]

Since 2009, Pinkerton has worked as an academic at Royal Holloway and until his election, as an associate professor of geopolitics.[5][6] In 2013, he served as an accredited observer of the Falkland Islands referendum.[7]

Political career

edit

Pinkerton first sought election to Parliament in the 2019 general election for Surrey Heath delivering an unexpected 11.1% swing against incumbent Michael Gove. He spent the next five years pursuing Surrey Heath for the Liberal Democrats,[8] seeing them come close to taking a number of Surrey County Council seats in 2021 and then taking control of Surrey Heath Borough Council in 2023, for the first time in its 49-year history.[9]
