Background
editA 2013 demo of "As the Pages Burn" was released as part of the "Seeds of War" bonus disc available with the artbook[2] of the album, and was also released as part of the band's Stolen Life EP. An instrumental version of the song was released on another bonus disc available with the artbook, and features all layers of the track apart from the vocals. A lyric video, created by Cloud Music Typography, was released on 28 May 2014.[3]
Lyrical content
editIn an interview for Metal Hammer magazine in 2021, lyricist Alissa White-Gluz explained the meaning behind the song, saying, "It was a feeling that if every day in your life is a page in your book, you can lighten the load by burning the past. I liked the idea that you could be present, but look forward. Nothing is written in stone, everything can be burned and changed. In a way, it came down to being 27 and thinking, ‘Am I gonna die this year?’ because that’s what people do when they’re 27, right? But actually no. I was gonna be reborn. I’d just met the love of my life and I’d joined a band that was the opposite of everything I’d experienced before. I didn’t even have to be the same person today I was yesterday".[4]
