Bardilo is a German given name and surname.[1] The name is known for its transliterations all over Eastern Europe, specifically in Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, and sometimes in the Balkans, specifically Albania and Serbia.
Etymology
editThere are multiple meanings behind the name in different etymologies.
- The Proto-Germanic prefix "bardǭ" literally means, axe, and the suffix -ilǭ is a deriative of *-ilaz, which forms a noun specifcally of tools, plants, and animals.[2]
- Likely borrowed to form a derivative (bardaz) as if meaning "beard-shaping tool," or "bearded axe," though the direction could be the reverse.
- It was likely that a man with facial hair was named Bordelius/Bardelius; a given name and surname.
- The etymological dictionary of Old Polish personal names, published by the Polish Academy of Sciences, notes the historical existence of the German name Bartol in Poland.[3] In addition, the name Bartilo existed historically in Poland (1448).[4]
- In Albanian etymology, Bardilo is likely a transliteration of the Latin Bardylis, which comes from the Albanian Bardhyl ("bright star").
- Other spellings, like Barzil and its derivatives, ultimately come from present-day Israel and are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Barzillai, a Gileadite from Rogelim, was a biblical figure in the Torah mentioned in the Second Book of Samuel.
