Background

edit

Once freed from the presence of El Cid in Valencia, the Almoravids were able to begin campaigns towards the counties of Barcelona and Urgel and the kingdom of Aragon. In 1114, coming from Valencia and commanded by Abu Abd Allah Muhammad Aysa[1] with reinforcements from Muhammad ibn al-Haŷŷ, governor of Zaragoza, they had entered through Lleida via Seo de Urgel and Segarra to the plain of Barcelona.

Meanwhile, the Almoravids of the Balearic Islands, who landed at the mouth of the Besòs River to attack Barcelona, destroyed Sant Adrià de Besòs and Sant Andreu de Palomar.[2]

The battle

edit

Martorell was evacuated while Ramon Berenguer III and the counties of Urgel and Cerdaña and the garrison of the castle lost by Udalard Ramon de Rosanes[3] faced the Almoravids, who were repulsed[4] and pursued, following the coast to Salou.[5]
