History
editThe app was first released as JianYing in China in 2019 and was initially available for iPhone and Android.[1][2] In 2020, it was renamed as CapCut and became available internationally.[3] It later expanded to include web and desktop versions for Mac and Windows.[2]
As of March 2023[update], CapCut has more than 200 million active users each month, and according to The Wall Street Journal, and also in March 2023, it was the second-most downloaded app in the U.S., behind that of Chinese discount retailer Temu.[4][5]
Features
editThe free version of CapCut has multiple features, including speed options for adjusting the duration of clips.[2] The Auto Captions tool can be used to generate accurate video captions that can be edited within the app.[2]
CapCut supports basic video editing functions, including editing, trimming, and splitting clips.[2] It allows the addition of new clips to projects but is limited to single-layer editing, with the exception of overlays, which enable picture-in-picture effects and background removal using the Cutout tool.[2] Users can export completed projects directly to TikTok or save them to their device for sharing on other platforms.[2]
