The authors of the Bridgewater Treatises were leading scientific men appointed in 1830 to write works on "the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as manifested in the Creation." They were appointed by the President of the Royal Society Davies Gilbert, with the assistance of the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Howley, and the Bishop of London, Charles James Blomfield, in fulfilment of a bequest by Francis Henry Egerton, the 8th Earl of Bridgewater.
