When people refuse to accept their legal obligations to be conscripted into mandatory military service (conscientious objection and draft evasion), or to escape from the military while still serving in it (desertion).
Such actions are almost always illegal, typically done either out of a personal motivation to avoid risking one's own life and safety in a war, and/or out of morally ideological beliefs (such as pacifism or other dissent against the government) as part of a political anti-war movement.
