This category contains those individuals who have held the most senior executive position in Shell plc. The official title of CEO was created in 2004, with Jeroen van der Veer being appointed in October 2004 and taking up the position in July 2005. Prior to that, the most senior position was that of Chairman of the Committee of Managing Directors, from 1946 to 2005. The situation was complicated by the fact that, within the group, there were two parent companies, Royal Dutch Petroleum and Shell Transport and Trading. The most senior executive in the former being the General Managing Director (or President-Director from 1956) of Royal Dutch Petroleum and the latter being the Chairman of Shell Transport and Trading. From 1946, both positions sat on the Committee of Managing Directors and it was from these two positions that the Chairman of the Committee of Managing Directors would be selected. Prior to 1946, both the General Managing Director of Royal Dutch Petroleum and the Chairman of Shell Transport and Trading were equally the most senior position in the group.
