SAHIYAGARH

edit

52 Km south east of Deoria(Uttar Pradesh) and 3 Km east of Bhagalpur(small town in deoria distric)at the bank of saryu river lies the Sahiyagarh.A place where many idols are left under the sun without any eye of govt archaelogical agencies. These idols are of either Pal or Gupta dynasty. Some of the remains of temple reminds the past glory of the place. Few of the idols are flown in the river by the villagers due to ignorance. Some of the idols are kept by them and they worship them as their KULDEVATA(family God). The villagers has kept the copper coins which were found in the area.Following are the places which needs a archeological attention: 1.Mahadev Mound: Along the bank of the river and south of the village a mound is situated which is called by local people it as Mahadev. The remains are only one fourth of its original form because mount was cut to make a primary school. 2.Remains of the Temple: Above the Mahadev mound the remains of an old temple can be seen. The wall of sanctum sanctorum of the temple is three feet wide and there are three marked place of idols. Remains of seven other rooms are also available. All are made according to Nagar style.Often copper coins and utensils used in worshipping the God are found in this area. 3.IDOLS:a) Idol of Sun: It is lying under the Peepal tree of the primary school. This is 4 feet high and 2 feet wide and made up of red sand stone. This idol is made according to directions of VISHNU-DHARMOTTARPURAN, VISHWAKARMSHILP, VRIHATSANHITA, AGNIPURAN, MATSYAPURAN and BHAVISYAPURAN. There is Dandi on the right side and Pingal on the left side.Between the feet Bhoodevi is lying and above Usha and Pratusha(both wives of Sun) are lying. b)Idol of Lord Vishnu: Behedded idol of lord Vishnu is lying in the remains of the temple. This is four and half feet high and two and half feet wide and made up of black stone.Three arms of the idols are missing. c) Other idol of Lord Vishnu: This is lying under the tree of the primary school.Only feet with anklets are left. d)Idol of Lord Shiv: This depicts the destroyer form of lord Shiv. This idol is a bit different from the other idols of SHIV found elsewhere in the country. e)Throne made up of granite:This is lying under a Peepal tree of the primary school.Probably this has been recovered from the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and used to be the main place of the prime idol.

Beside all these there is a pond which is called as KUND by local people. It is a local saying that this pond was connected with the temple but there is no proof of this.

C-MODEP a local organization is working hard to give its glory back.

These categories are pretty messy. Would anyone object to me having a go at tidying them? PatHadley (talk) 21:47, 26 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
