Hillsboro College, Illinois State University, Carthage College, Carthage, Illinois

All three of the above colleges are interconnected. Hillsboro College, Hillsboro, Illinois was founded in 1847, as Lutheran Church College. It closed in 1852, apparently for financial reasons. An attempt to start up again in Springfield, Illinois, the next year as Illinois State University, closed in 1869, for the same reason as Hillsboro College. In 1878, a new attempt was made in the founding of Carthage College, Carthage, Illinois, just east of the Mississippi River, in Hancock County, Illinois. This was 9 years after Illinois State University (private not state) closed in 1869. Carthage College in Illinois closed in 1962, and moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where it has grown in enrollment since the relocation. The move was made because of the isolation of Carthage, Illinois, in an area of farming country, with no large metropolitan centers close by the campus. You have not included Greer College, Hoopeston, Illinois. My mother attended there in 1910-1911 transferring from William Woods College in Missouri. She was teacher in a one room school house not far from Hoopeston. I have a large photo of her Greer College class taken in 1909, if you are interested. The college was founded by John Greer and closed a short time just before or just after WW I began. The Vermilion County Historical Society may have much more information than I could offer you. I know Mother would have been happy to give you information, but she died in 1974. My father's first cousin taught at Greer College for a few years. She had been a school teacher. George R.
