The fact that this category is restricted to British dukedoms is problematic. It is probably best to place all articles in this category in a Category:British Dukedoms, and make it a subcategory of this category. Any objections? -- Itai 21:24, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Well it has passsed 3 years now, and the problem is still there. Kudos to those who would take the job away ! PurpleHz 10:27, 12 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
"Dukedom" implies that the title is simply named for a location, and that the duke has no responsibility for that location, i.e. the British peerage system. For other countries, the office of duke should be called a "duchy". So basically "British dukedom" is redundant. See WP:NCROY. Kauffner (talk) 04:33, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
"Dukedom" implies nothing at all as it hasn't been an English word since about the '''''fifteenth''''' century, and was not exactly "correct" even then (in the broadest sense of the term, this being before any linguistic standardization). I have seen within the past seven years, this "word" be re-invented by the ignorant who simply do not know the word "duchy" and cannot be bothered to look it up. To begin with, it only came about over uncertainty of how to refer to the holdings and houses of certain foreign nobility — and, since the term was already foreign, we soon settled on Anglicizing the existing foreign term (from Old and Middle French — which is also why the feminine is "duchess" not "dukess" or something along those lines). I repeat, it is not an English word, and should not be on Wikipedia, expect as a listing of errors. HwætGrimmalkin (talk) 03:26, 11 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
