The people who proposed deleting and voted to delete this category [1] really didn't do basic research, which is just another example of how flawed the deletion process on Wikipedia is. Independent Linux distributions are those that aren't based on another Linux distributions, e.g. Debian is independent because it is not based on another distribution, while Ubuntu being based on Debian is a dependent distribution on Debian.
