The Great Rift Valley proper does not extend to areas beyond eastern Africa such as the eastern Mediterranean, in most usages these days. It was so used by some early western explorers before the sciences of geology and plate tectonics were more fully developed. The actual geologic great rift is the East African Rift. In the Red Sea is a separate spreading center called the Red Sea Rift. In the area of Palestine and Israel, it's the Dead Sea Transform fault. Tmangray (talk) 02:50, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
