editThis category has been created to list all those towns, villages and other settlements which were occupied or founded during the reign of the Mercian kings. Because most modern settlements no longer go by their original Anglo-Saxon names, I have chosen to create pages using their original names with an embedded redirect to the modern entry. In all cases the Mercian Settlements category is being added to the redirect page rather than the modern version.
It is okay to put modern settlements on the list as a place-marker, but these will ultimately need to be converted into their original Anglo-Saxon.
When sufficiently populated, this category will be used to inform a Mercian settlements article, which will list settlements and their dates (from founding or entry into Mercia to either the end of Mercian rule or the time that the settlement was abandoned.Metabaronic (talk) 10:33, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
Name change and deletion
editA proposal has been made to rename or delete this category. Its creation is an ongoing work under WP:WPASK and is specifically to list settlements that were established during the anglo-saxon period. Redirects on original placenames are added to enable the category to be used to populate a settlement list, and also as placemarks for follow-up stubs on anglo-saxon etymology. Category:Mercian settlements is merely the first sub-category being completed.Metabaronic (talk) 19:51, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
