Should Pope John XVIII be added to this Category? His page says he abdicated.
- This should probably be called "resigned" and moved a bit as the Pope isn't a monarch and it's called resignation.--T. Anthony (talk) 12:47, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
- It's not required to be a monarch to abdicate. A cursory browse through the literature shows the term has been used when a head of state who isn't a monarch gives up their position. It's also not uncommonly used for bishops voluntarily leaving a see. (However, even if the term "abdication" were limited to monarchs, note that the Catholic church models itself after a monarchy, with much of the attendant terminology and trappings. It has thrones and tiaras and coronations and footmen, so why not abdications?) Please don't change the name of the category without taking it to Requested Moves. —Psychonaut (talk) 15:37, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
