Why are Northern Irish footballers listed here? They're from a different country. Also how does this category handle the footballers who played for both the Republic and the North, or what about the ones who played before there were two separate teams? WikiGull

Sportspeople from the Republic of Ireland

Why is this category a member of Category:Sportspeople from the Republic of Ireland? I would guess that a substantial minority are not from the Republic of Ireland. Their parents might be. Their grandparents might be from the Free State. Their great-grandparents might be from the UK. They themselves are not from the Republic of Ireland. Guessing is not sufficient evidence of a lack of right to be in the category when it's Wikipedia - citation needed. As for their grandparents - many sportspeople playing today would be way too young for their grandparents to be from the Free State. But in any case a citation would be needed to show they were not from the Republic - and if they are playing for the Republic it would need clarification on what you mean by "not from the Republic". ☕ Antiqueight haver 03:59, 10 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Why should the burden of proof lie with saying that a player, like John Aldridge, is not from the Republic of Ireland? Is it not sufficient to say that he was born in Britain and played most of his career in Britain? Why cannot the citation for his own article as to his place of birth suffice? It such a citation is lacking in his own article, then the claim ought to be deleted. Or is that being too pedantic? Laurel Lodged (talk) 11:05, 10 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
