Category name?
editThe introduction to the Flying boat article explains that flying boats are a form of seaplane; the Seaplane article subdivides the subject into flying boats, Floatplanes and Amphibious aircraft. While I'm not sure about Amphibians (IMO there are amphibious flying boats and amphibious float planes), the name of this category (Seaplanes and flying boats) is misleading, implying that seaplane is a synonym for floatplane. Should it not be simply 'Seaplanes'? Perhaps there is also a need for a category 'Amphibious aircraft'. Of course the same applies to the List of seaplanes and flying boats.
Any comments? --TraceyR (talk) 05:11, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Agreed - it needs to be renamed. The wikicommons categories had the same problem but have been largely fixed.
The breakdown should probably be as follows:
|-------------------------------------Seaplanes---------------------------------|
|----------Flying Boats------------------|----------Floatplanes-----------------|
| Flying Boats | Amphibious Flying Boats | Floatplanes | Amphibious Floatplanes |
|--------------|-------------------------|-------------|------------------------|
Optionally a section can be added to flying boats and floatplanes sections for retractable beaching gear (they looks like amphibians but cannot alight on land).
Each sub-section can also be broken down by nationality (British/American/French/German/Russian/Italian) as I belive there are already categories for some of these. (British Flying Boats for instance)

Oppose this is a WP:ENGVAR issue, per the article at seaplane The rename will make the category exclude "flying boats". Ambiguity in the category name will reduce the scope and give editors the impression that many things are improperly categorized and must be removed. -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 02:09, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- This page was erroneously named by someone who doesn't understand the topic well enough to have an opinion. Seaplanes are all aircraft that can land on water, period. IT DOES NOT EXCLUDE FLYING BOATS. Read that again, and no, this is not an ENGVAR issue, but a basic knowledge issue. Every flying boat is ALSO a seaplane, as is every floatplane. It makes no sense to add just flying boats to that, if one is not also adding floatplanes. One exception - unlike with flying boats, no clear categorization distinction can be made between amphibious and non amphibious floatplanes as they are on a case by case basis for every type involved, since the floats are not generally provided by the manufacturer, but are instead an aftermarket option, and either pure floats or amphibious floats can be used interchangeably. - NiD.29 (talk) 23:16, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
