Subcat naming

edit

@Andrybak: this is a useful hierarchy, but I suggest renaming a lot of the subcats.

I agree that "Wikipedia" is not needed before "template" in the cat names all the way down, but IMHO:

  1. "tracking" should be followed by "categories" rather than without that word
  2. "tracking categories" is better than "issues"
  3. "template" as a descriptive word should be singular, as in e.g. Category:Template parameter issues by task but not some of its subcats.

E.g. please can we rename:

If you agree, we can rename these under WP:C2E. – Fayenatic London 13:19, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

When I was creating these, I was thinking "this is the tracking done by templates". I don't really care much for adding the word "categories". But I won't oppose, if you want to nominate. —andrybak (talk) 14:10, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
OK. What was the intended difference between your new Hatnote templates parameter issues and its parent Hatnote template tracking categories? They currently have the same contents. Strangely, the duplicate "issues" category has been copied as a duplicate category also in Slovene and Thai by Pinky sl and BeckNoDa. ([1]) – Fayenatic London 08:56, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hatnote templates parameter issues was created in 2022 for the tree of Wikipedia template parameter issues, before I realized that Hatnote template tracking categories existed (see this edit from 2024).
The difference between Wikipedia template tracking categories and Wikipedia template parameter issues, is that the "issues" are problems that need fixing, while "tracking" is more generic. Sometimes the template tracking categories exist just for the sake of statistics, curiosity, etc. For this reason, I'd oppose the proposed rename nomination (which hasn't made it to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 July 13 yet).
Another point about proposed renaming Wikipedia template parameter issues → "Template parameter tracking categories": the word "parameter" makes the category too narrow, because not all tracking is related to template's parameters. For example, some tracking is due to a page's namespace or name. —andrybak (talk) 09:21, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
This suggests that it would be better to remove the word "parameter" from Wikipedia template parameter issues and its subcategories, which I created in 2022. However, "Wikipedia template issues" would be indistinguishable from Wikipedia template cleanup. Perhaps instead we could have additional layer of cleanup categories (using "by task" and "by topic" as an example):
However, I haven't yet encountered "enough" subcategories of Wikipedia template cleanup for this additional layer. See also yesterday's discussion Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 July 12#Category:Wikipedia category maintenance, where lack of distinction between Category:Wikipedia category maintenance and Category:Wikipedia category cleanup was brought up. —andrybak (talk) 09:21, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm dumb     I didn't think through the argument about the word "parameter". Of course, "Template parameter tracking categories" has the word "parameter" in it to distinguish from "Template tracking categories". I struck out the nonsense paragraph. The argument about not all tracking being about problems that need fixing stands. —andrybak (talk) 09:36, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
From the point of view of Slovenian Wikipedians: It is not so strange. We strive to keep our templates in line with yours, primarily due to the translation tool and the system settings for various functionalities, including categorization. Then we make additional small adjustments as needed. Given our limited resources, we often rely on your established templates and trust in your work. --Pinky sl (talk) 09:27, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your replies. I have not yet listed the categories that I tagged, and intend to come back to this later. – Fayenatic London 09:08, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
