editThe tracks "Scars in Complex Patterns" and "In Cleansing Fire" were released one day apart on August 10th and 11th[2], respectively, with the tracklist and release date also being announced[1]. A month later on September 16, they released the track "Visions of Hostility"[3]. A month after on October 15, the band released their third single, "Numb (Transfuse)", eight days before the album's release[4].
Composition and themes
editAccording to guitarist and vocalist Gabe Manuel, this album was written when the band were facing individual personal struggles.
“[The album] was written and recorded during a period of transition and turmoil for everyone in Chamber," Manuel tells us. "We were all going through our own personal struggles and we found solace in working on these songs and getting everything we were feeling out on the table. We are all influenced by a lot of different kinds of music and art, and while it was a challenge to represent all of those things on the record in a cohesive way, we grew as songwriters and musicians as a result of that challenge." ~ Gabe Manuel[2]
An example of this theme is explored in "Numb (Transfuse)", which was reportedly written last-minute[4]. The preceding single, "In Cleansing Fire", contains lyrics written about racism and injustice in the United States and rejecting "the argument that we aren’t responsible for the crimes of our ancestors"[2].
Musically, Cost of Sacrifice contains elements of metalcore from the early 2000s, along with '90s mathcore and slight nu-metal.
