Oladipupo Ogundele, (popularly known by his stage name DIPP), born June 20, 1980[1] is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and dancer; hailing from the Yoruba tribe. DIPP has mainly gained recognition for his musical talents. He has won several music awards including the awards for Best Choreography at the NMVA - Nigerian Music Video Awards 2010'.[2] DIPP is known for his engagement, artistry, stage presence and his impact on the Nigerian music scene.

Biography

DIPP was born June 20, 1980 into a family of five boys. DIPP began his musical career at the age of nine, singing along to the hits of Michael Jackson while imitating the dance moves of the master of the falsettos and stage performance. When he was 5, DIPP's mother brought home a Michael Jackson 'Thriller' VHS. From then on, the artist categorized Michael Jackson as his mentor; striving to follow in his foot steps and obtain stardom within Nigeria. Despite not having a musical background growing up, DIPP describes his true passion as dance. In which he claims to have been committed to throughout all phases of his life. Reinforcing his self proclaimed title as a performer rather than a musician. DIPP went on to graduate from Ahmadu Bello University.[3]

Dipp stage name and personal name is unique to him. His stage name came during his time at Ahmadu Bello University, he created his stage name by hanging out with friends. DIPP was asked how he came up with a stage name and he said "I had a lot of friends who called me different names. My full name is Oladipupo Ogundele so they called me Dipo and they eventually slapped it down to Dipp."[4][5] and Ogundele meaning arriving home.[6]

When asked in an interview what it was like growing up in a house full of boys, DIPP described it as, "a wonderful experience, then and now. In my home, we were like a basketball team." He later mentions how sometimes he'd imagine having a sister, but ultimately feeling grateful he, "did not have to worry about a guy coming over to take her out on a date. I imagine it would have been very discomforting for me".[7]

Dipp has a BSc in Building from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.[8]

Music career

Singer-songwriter DIPP started recording his debut solo album, The Future is Now, in 2005. The album aims for a combination of indigenous and international renditions of the R&B genre while describing the struggles of a man striving to achieve his destiny.

In 2009, he won the Best Special Effects and Editing award at the Sound City Music Awards for his music video "Dangerous" which was directed by special-effects wizard, MEX. Later in the year, he released his second single, 'Pop Off Selecta'. DIPP collaborated once again with MEX in order to produce the 'Pop Off Selecta' video which quickly gained popularity. In less than two months, 'Pop Off Selecta' had risen up the charts and peaked at the number one spot in Sound City Top Ten Videos chart where it remained for many weeks. He won two awards at the NMVA 2010 for Best Use of Special Effects and Best Choreography. After taking a break from the music industry, DIPP returned with his song 'Play Love'.[9] His most recent song, 'Sunshine', was released August 6, 2022.

In an interview, DIPP said that he draws inspiration from Usher, Ginuwine, and Michael Jackson, crediting them for teaching him how to integrate dance into his performances.[10]
