Dar es Salaam School of Journalism

Dar es Salaam School of Journalism (DSJ) is a Tanzanian educational institution specializing in journalism. Established in 1998,[1] it is the second[2] private institution to provide journalism education in the country.

The institution offers a wide range of programs, including certificates and diplomas in journalism, digital marketing, public relations, and information technology. Short-term courses such as broadcasting, newspaper design, and film production are also available, designed to meet the diverse needs of students and industry requirements.[3] DSJ is accredited by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) and is a part of the Union of Training Institutions (UTI) since 2016, which has strengthened its resources and partnerships.[4]

The school's main campus is located in the Sharriff Shamba area of Ilala, Dar es Salaam. Over the years, DSJ has built a reputation as one of the leading journalism schools in Tanzania, with a significant number of alumni working in the media industry, government, private sector, and international organizations.[5]

History

The Dar es Salaam School of Journalism was founded in 1998 as one of the first private institutions in Tanzania dedicated to journalism education. Since its inception, the school has been instrumental in shaping the media landscape in Tanzania by producing skilled journalists and communication professionals. Initially offering only basic certificate programs, DSJ expanded its curriculum to include diploma courses as demand for specialized journalism training grew. Over the years, the school has adapted to changes in the media industry, incorporating digital media and public relations into its programs.[6]

Accreditation and Partnerships

DSJ is accredited by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE), ensuring that its programs meet national educational standards. In 2016, DSJ became part of the Union of Training Institutions (UTI), a move that has enhanced its capacity to offer a wider range of programs and to develop strategic partnerships with other educational institutions and industry stakeholders. These partnerships have provided students with opportunities for internships, practical training, and employment after graduation.[7]

Alumni

DSJ boasts a strong alumni network with many graduates holding prominent positions in the media industry, government, NGOs, and international organizations. The alumni association plays an active role in supporting current students through mentorship programs, guest lectures, and networking opportunities. Notable alumni include journalists who have worked for major Tanzanian newspapers, radio stations, and television networks.[8]

DSJ is committed to engaging with the local community through various outreach programs. The school regularly hosts workshops and seminars on media literacy, ethical journalism, and the role of media in society. These events are open to the public and aim to raise awareness about the importance of responsible journalism in a democratic society.[9]
