David Agius is a Maltese politician from the Nationalist Party.
He was born on 18 November 1968. He married his wife Deborah, née Spiteri, on 4 May 1996 and they have two daughters Davinia and Désirée. They live in Attard.
He studied Economics and Management at the University of Malta and works at Malta Freeport.
In his youth, he was president of the student council during his post secondary years and later president of the SDM (Maltese Christian Democrat Students). He was also part of the different sections within the structures of the Nationalist Party – MŻPN (Nationalist Party Youth Movement) and Solidarjetà Ħaddiema Partit Nazzjonalista (Nationist Party Workers Section). In these sections he also served international roles such as vice president of EUCDW (European Union of Christian Democrat Workers) within the European Peoples Party, a post which he still holds till today.
He was part of the first newsroom when Radio101 - the radio station of the Nationalist Party - was inaugurated. Later he served as director of the information office of the Nationalist Party. Since 1991 he presented and produced various programmes on Radio 101, Net TV, UTV and Smash TV.
He was elected on the Nationalist Party Executive and Administrative Council in 1996, a post which he still holds today. In 2001, he was elected on the Attard Local Council with the majority of votes.
In the general elections of 2003, he was elected on his first attempt from the 7th district. He was Member of Parliament between 2003 and 2008. During this legislature, he was Chairman of the Consideration of Bills Committee.
In the general elections of 2008, he was elected again as a Member of Parliament, this time from the 11th district. He was also a candidate on the 7th district. During the legislature 2008-2013, he was Government Whip and PN Group Secretary and member of the Maltese Parliament House Business Committee. He was also Head of the Parliamentary Delegation of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association as well as Head of the Malta-France Friendship Group.
In the general elections of 2013, he was elected for the third time as Member of Parliament from the 11th district. He was also a candidate on the 7th district. During the legislature 2013-2017, he was Opposition Whip and PN Group Secretary. He also served as Opposition Spokesperson for local government, youth and sport.
In the general elections of 2017, he was elected for the fourth consecutive time as a Member of Parliament. In this election he was elected from both the 8th and the 11th district. In November 2017 he was elected as the Nationalist Party Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs. During this legislature he was the Opposition Spokesperson for energy and water management, a member of the Maltese Parliament House Business Committee and Petitions Committee, formed part of the Maltese Parliamentary Delegation of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Vice President of EUCDW (European Union of Christian Democrat Workers) and a member of the Nationalist Party Executive and Administrative Council.
In 2022 he was elected for the fifth consecutive time as a Member of Parliament. He was then elected Deputy Speaker and Shadow Minister for Social Affairs. In January 2024, David Agius was given new responsibilities shadowing EU Funds and Sports.
He has also been confirmed as a candidate for the 2024 European Parliament election.[1]
In January 2024, during a speech at the Parliament of Malta about the Sports Governance and Integrity Act, Agius called out the lack of accountability for corruption cases within Maltese football, stating that "in Malta, people know who is going to win before the game is even played, and it's almost sure who will win the league this year".[2][3] Agius's statements received criticism from the Malta Football Association, which considered some of his claims to be "nothing short of a slap in the face for all those athletes, volunteers, and most of all fans".[3][4]
