David L. Eaton is an American toxicologist. He is a professor emeritus in the University of Washington Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences.[1] and adjunct professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy.[2]

Biography

Eaton received his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) in 1978.

He joined the faculty of the University of Washington in 1979. He held the position of Toxicology Program Director in the Department of Environmental Health from 1983 to 1990, Associate Chairman of the Department from 1990 to 1992, Associate Dean for Research in the School of Public Health from 1999 to 2005, and Associate Vice Provost for Research from 2005 to 2013. From 2013 to 2018, he served as Dean and Vice Provost of the Graduate School at the University of Washington.[3] He continues his academic role as Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences and Public Health Genetics.[4] He was the founding director of the Center for Ecogenetics & Environmental Health, an NIEHS Core Center of Excellence, from 1995 to 2013.[5]

Nationally, Eaton has served on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer of the American Board of Toxicology (1990-1994), and as President of the Society of Toxicology (2001-2002).[6] He has also been a member of the Board of Environmental Studies and Toxicology at the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council (1996-1999), a member of the Board of Directors and Vice-President of the Toxicology Education Foundation, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences. He is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Academy of Toxicological Sciences.

In 2011, Eaton was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences[7] and the Washington State Academy of Sciences, for which he also served on the Board of Directors from 2012-2015.

Eaton has published over 190 scientific articles and book chapters in the fields of toxicology and risk assessment, including ‘principals of toxicology’ chapters in several major textbooks in the fields of toxicology and environmental and occupational health.
