In 2017, Qantas announced plans to take on this challenge of aviation: direct flights from the East Coast of Australia to London and New York. Codenamed 'Project Sunrise'.

The Airbus A350-1000ULR was chosen, and 12 aircraft were ordered in May 2022. The first aircraft, named Vega, will be delivered in April 2027.

The A350 will operate more direct routes to Australia, with a significantly shorter point-to-point travel time – reducing flight time up to four hours compared to the flight time of one-stop flights.

Why the A350

For 2 years Qantas was deciding between the A350-900 (and -1000 or the 777-8. Many people believe that Qantas chose the A350

because of availability issues with the 777-8

The 777-8 is based on a shrink of the 777-9 where as the a A350-1000 is based on a stretch from the A350-900. and in planes stretches tend to be more efficient than shrinks

Why did Qantas chose to do this

Many believe the choice for this challenge was because of Gulf carriers, that are situated in the gulf or about half way through the journey, were situated perfects for flights between Australia and northern countries. mainly benefiting of the tourism between Australia and northern countries. So they asked Airbus to make the A350ULR to generate more money for Qantas
