Aalo Atomics is an American nuclear technology company based in Austin, Texas. The company develops sodium-cooled microreactors intended for factory production.[1] On July 4, 2026, its test reactor achieved first criticality at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). It was the fourth advanced reactor to do so under a U.S. Department of Energy pilot program.[2]

History

Matt Loszak and Yasir Arafat founded Aalo Atomics in 2023. Loszak serves as chief executive officer. Arafat serves as president and chief technology officer. Before Aalo, Arafat led the MARVEL microreactor project at Idaho National Laboratory.[1]

In December 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) identified a tentative site at INL for an experimental Aalo reactor facility.[1] The company broke ground at the site in August 2025.[3] In the same month, Aalo raised a $100 million Series B round led by Valor Equity Partners, with participation from investors including Hitachi Ventures and NRG Energy. The round brought the company's total funding above $136 million.[4] Aalo was also selected as one of four partners to develop up to 1 gigawatt of nuclear generation capacity at the Texas A&M University System RELLIS Campus.[4]

In early 2026, Aalo announced fuel fabrication contracts with Global Nuclear Fuel, an affiliate of GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, and a contract with Baker Hughes. Urenco USA completed fuel enrichment for the company in the same period.[3]

On July 4, 2026, the company's Aalo-X Critical Test Reactor completed a zero-power fueled criticality demonstration at INL under DOE authorization.[2] It was the fourth DOE-authorized advanced reactor to reach criticality under the department's Reactor Pilot Program. The milestone met a deadline in Executive Order 14301, signed in May 2025, which called for at least three advanced reactors to reach criticality by July 4, 2026.[5] The reactor reached criticality about eight months after groundbreaking.[6]

In July 2026, Aalo and data center operator Crusoe announced a partnership to develop a nuclear-powered data center.[7]

Technology

Aalo's reactor design is a 10-megawatt-electric (MWe), sodium-cooled microreactor fueled by low-enriched uranium. The design draws on the DOE's MARVEL microreactor. The company states that it designs the reactor for mass manufacturing with existing commercial supply chains.[1]

Aalo-X is the first full-scale demonstration plant based on the design. It is planned to operate at 30 megawatts thermal and produce 10 MWe through a steam generator and turbine.[3] Its Critical Test Reactor contains a full-scale core.[6] The company's planned commercial product, the Aalo Pod, is a modular plant that combines several 10 MWe reactors. Commercial deployment requires authorization from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).[5] The NRC lists Aalo among its pre-application activities for advanced reactors.[8]

The company also built a non-nuclear prototype in Texas to test design elements, including its sodium coolant systems.[4]
