Abby Ruhman (born October 22, 1991), better known by her online alias Abby Wren is an American YouTuber, online personality, entrepreneur, creative makeup artist and seasoned video creator.[1] Ruhman blends a vibrant artistry style with high-value production in an attempt to encourage others to embrace their individuality through bold creative expression. Her bald head has become her unique canvas, and she shares her journey living with Alopecia to spread awareness of the autoimmune disease, while she turns herself into creative masterpieces across social media.

Early Life/Career

edit

Ruhman grew up on a small farm on the Flathead Reservation in rural NorthWestern Montana, to parents Doug Ruhman (educator at the Salish and Kootenai College) and Andrea Ruhman (a Registered Nurse on the reservation). She graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Psychology, before going on to study makeup artistry at John Casablancas Institute in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada, where she was top of her class.[2] Ruhman worked as a creative makeup artist for 6 years in the tv/film industry, displaying her work at New York Fashion Week, the Emmy Awards and countless publications before shifting her focus to social media full time. She won the Benefit Brow Search Makeup Competition in 2022,[3] taking home a $50,000 prize.

Living with Alopecia

edit

Ruhman lost all of her hair to the autoimmune disease Alopecia Totalis in 2006, right as she was entering high school.[4] Over the years her hair has regrown and fallen out again several times, and in 2018 she and her (now) husband Wade Holland publicly shaved her head in a statement to own and celebrate her journey with hair loss. She chooses not to wear wigs, in order to celebrate her baldness. She now uses her bald head as her canvas to paint, in order to spread awareness about Alopecia.

Ruhman has dedicated her life's work to spreading awareness about Alopecia and hair loss, and she has chosen to be very open and public about her experience across social media, in hopes to encourage others to celebrate their physical differences. She volunteers her time with different Alopecia organizations across the world teaching creative makeup artistry as a therapeutic expression.[5] Her mission statement "Different Is Dope," has become her brand, representing inclusivity throughout all industries and advocating for differences to be celebrated.[6] Ruhman works often with children experiencing hair loss,[7] and deeply believes that empowerment and confidence begins at an early age.

Personal Life

edit

In 2017 Ruhman met fellow Montanan Wade Holland, in Vancouver Canada while she was studying makeup artistry. They married on August 26, 2023,[8] and run their media company Wrenegade Media together in Los Angeles, California.[9] Ruhman has one younger sister, Molly Wade. Her parents are Doug and Andrea Ruhman.
