Adam Schoon

Adam Schoon was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, in1963. Today, Adam Schoon is an English antiques and fine art specialist and frequent TV presenter and broadcaster at the BBC.[1]. His main areas of expertise are Chinese, Japanese and South East Asian art and antiques.

Early Life

Born in Sheffield and grew up in the Peak District, Derbyshire. Educated at Grindleford Primary School, then St Olaves[2] and St Peter’s[3] in York (as a boarder).

Television Career

Adam has been a TV Art and Antiques consultant[4] and presenter since 1990 – he has worked on numerous programmes and long running series such as Going For a Song (1990-1999)[5], The Antiques Show[6], and made his  debut on BBC[7] TVs The Antiques Roadshow[8] in 1999.

Professional Career

Adam joined Henry Spencer & Sons, Retford, Nottinghamshire in 1980 as a trainee antiques valuer at the age of 17 years.

Independent consultant from 1990 – clients include Tennants Auctioneers[9], North Yorkshire Council[10], Dukes of Dorchester[11], Hansons[12], Cheffins of Cambridge[13], and national museums, universities and councils. Adam acts as an expert witness in court cases involving disputes as to authenticity of art and antiques.

Adam is also a partner at Hobson & Schoon Fine Auctions based in Quinta do Lago, Algarve providing valuation and auction services to the international community living in Portugal and wider Europe.

Schoon is a well known public speaker – and has previously lectured nationally for NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies)[14] now known as The Arts Society, as well as for charity and corporate events. His many subjects include the origins of blue and white porcelain, The China Trade (emphasis on Portugal and the rise of the East India Companies), and British folk art.

Adam has been a life-long member of The OCS (Oriental Ceramic Society)[15] and travels extensively in the Far East both for study and business purposes.

Personal Life

Adam has two daughters by a previous partner.

He enjoys walking, cycling and swimming and is a keen bird watcher.

Adam supports numerous charities including Madrugada in Algarve, Portugal.
