Akintunde Babatunde (born October 1994) is a Nigerian media development expert, journalist, civic technology expert, and the director of programmes at the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID).[1][2]
Early life and childhood
editAkintunde earned his bachelor's degree in educational management/mathematics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He later pursued advanced studies, obtaining a master's degree in media practice for development and social change from the University of Sussex, UK, in 2021. He also holds a certificate in civic leadership from the presidential precinct in the US as a US government Mandela Washington Fellow in 2022.[3]
Career
editAkintunde's career begins at CJID, beginning in 2017, where he led the creation of DUBAWA, a fact-checking platform.[4] His contributions to Dubawa led to the training of over 500 journalists and earned him a nomination for the African Fact-Checker Award of the Year 2018.[5] Akintunde led the development of UDEME, CJID's social accountability tool, empowering citizens to monitor government spending on development projects.[6] In 2022, he convened the first climate change media summit in Nigeria.[7]
Akintunde is the Anglophone Africa Coordinator for the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) in London, where he leads the Open Climate Reporting Initiative for Anglophone Africa.[8] 130 climate change reports in Nigeria were made under his leadership at the CIJ.[2] Akintunde has expanded climate change reporting in Nigeria and Ghana through his organization,[3] Vantage Network Africa.[9]
