Alexander Shah is a Singaporean boxing promoter who has organized professional boxing events in Singapore and other parts of Asia. He became known for his involvement in efforts to develop professional boxing in Singapore during the 2010s and for promoting bouts sanctioned by regional and international boxing organizations.[1][2]

Boxing promotion career

Shah has been involved in boxing promotion in Asia since the 2000s. STORM-ASIA reported in 2017 that he had been promoting boxing events around the region since 2007, gaining experience in markets including Thailand and the Philippines before focusing on developing professional boxing in Singapore.[2]

In July 2016, Berita Harian profiled Shah and his efforts to increase the profile of professional boxing in Singapore.[1] Later that month, the newspaper reported that Shah had organized an event featuring four WBC Asia championship bouts on the same card.[3]

In 2017, Shah was director of Cartel International Promotions. In February, the company staged the WBC Asia Battle of Champions at Far East Square in Singapore, with Shah describing the event as part of an effort to increase professional boxing activity in the country.[4]

The following month, Cartel International Promotions staged a boxing event at the OCBC Arena in Singapore headlined by WBC Silver welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi and Qudratillo Abduqaxorov. BoxingScene reported that Shah's Cartel Promotions staged the event.[5]

The event also included Indonesian boxer Daud Yordan. Indonesian sports publication Bola.com reported that Shah had spent several months preparing Yordan's bout against Thailand's Campee Phayom and discussed his role in organizing the event.[6]

Ahead of the event, Zimbabwean newspaper The Standard reported on Shah's involvement in organizing Manyuchi's title defence and discussions concerning Manny Pacquiao's possible attendance.[7]

Berita Harian also profiled Shah in February 2017 in connection with his ambition to stage major professional boxing events at the Singapore Sports Hub.[8]

Recognition

In May 2017, Berita Harian reported that Shah had received recognition as an Asia-Pacific boxing promoter following his involvement in several professional boxing events in Singapore, including the March event at the Singapore Sports Hub.[9]

The following month, the newspaper published a further profile of Shah, reporting on his continuing promotional activities and his signing of a former world champion.[10]

Later promotional activity

Shah continued to be involved in boxing promotion outside Singapore. BoxingScene reported on a professional boxing event in Johor, Malaysia, staged by Shah's Cartel Promotions together with Malaysian promoter Farkhan Haron.[11]

Boxing career

Shah became involved in professional boxing promotion in Southeast Asia before focusing on developing professional boxing in Singapore. In July 2016, Singapore newspaper Berita Harian reported on Shah's role as a local boxing promoter involved in WBC-sanctioned professional boxing.[1]

Later that month, Berita Harian reported that Shah had promoted four championship contests on a single WBC Asia event.[2]

In February 2017, Shah, then a director of Cartel International Promotions, was identified by Berita Harian as a principal figure behind the WBC Asia Battle of Champions at Far East Square in Singapore. The event featured seven bouts and fourteen professional boxers.[3]

International boxing publication BoxingScene also reported on Shah's promotional activities with Cartel Promotions in Malaysia during this period.[4]

Singapore Sports Hub event

In February 2017, Berita Harian reported on Shah's plans to bring WBC championship boxing to the Singapore Sports Hub.[5]

The event was subsequently held at the OCBC Arena in March 2017 and was headlined by WBC Silver welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi against Uzbekistan's Qudratillo Abduqaxorov.[6]

Abduqaxorov defeated Manyuchi in the first round. BoxingScene reported that the Singapore event was staged by Alexander Shah of Cartel Promotions.[7]

Management of professional boxers

In addition to promoting events, Shah has worked in the management and representation of professional boxers.

In 2017, former IBF super-featherweight world champion Malcolm Klassen of South Africa signed with Shah. In an interview with Asian Boxing, Klassen described Shah as his promoter and manager.[8]

Berita Harian also profiled Shah's expansion in professional boxing and his signing of a former world champion in June 2017.[9]

Evolution Fight Series

Shah later became associated with Evolution Fight Series and promoted professional boxing events in Thailand and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

In 2019, boxing publication PhilBoxing identified Shah of Singapore as a promoter of Evolution Fight Series in Pattaya, Thailand.[10]

Official WBA Asia records identify Evolution Fight Series, with Shah named as promoter, in connection with WBA Asia championship boxing in Pattaya.[11]

In January 2022, WBC Asia identified Shah, Nazar Moroz and Urgyen Rinchen Sim as the promotional team behind an Evolution Fight Series event planned for Bangkok featuring three WBC Asia championship contests.[12]

International Boxing Association involvement

Shah has also been involved with an organization using the name International Boxing Association (IBA) in professional boxing activities in Asia.

In 2019, IBA records identified Shah and Evolution Fight Series in connection with IBA-sanctioned championship events in Thailand. The organization listed Shah as promoter of an Evolution Fight Series event in Pattaya that included IBA championship contests.[13]

IBA records also identify Evolution Fight Series and Shah in connection with IBA championship boxing in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, in December 2019.[14]

In November 2019, Shah was involved as a matchmaker in an IBA world-title event in Indonesia featuring Daud Yordan. PhilBoxing identified Shah in connection with the event and Evolution Fight Series.[15]

The IBA subsequently identified Shah as its Asian coordinator. Its officers listing names Alexander Shah of Singapore as Asian coordinator.[16]

The organization has also credited Shah with supporting its activities in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.[17]

Awards and recognition

In May 2017, Berita Harian reported that Shah had received Asia-Pacific recognition for his work as a professional boxing promoter.[18]

In May 2018, Berita Harian reported that Shah had again been recognised by WBC Asia for his contribution to professional boxing in Singapore.[19]
