Alexander Wayne Weber, born 27 July 2001..[1], is a Canadian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder; most recently for Rimba Star FC in the Brunei Super League[1]. At 22 years old, Weber has won numerous individual awards, and was named club captain at Rimba Star FC. Until 2023, he had spent his entire professional career with Assalam FC in the East-Timorese Liga Futebol Amadora Primeira Divisão, where he signed his first professional contract at the age of 18[2]. Internationally, Weber has yet to make his debut for the Canadian national team, the closest he has come being a U12 Team Canada West selection[3]. A creative midfielder who can also play on the left wing and at forward, Weber was named to the Brunei Super League Best XI and a starter for the All-Star team, with 2 goals and 12 assists in 14 league games in the 2023-24 season. Weber is currently a free agent[1]
Early Life
editWeber was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; the first of four children to Grant and Sandi Weber. In 2001, they moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where his brother Johnathan was born, and in 2005 they moved again to Calgary, Alberta, where his sister Chanah and youngest brother Samuel were born. Growing up, Weber excelled athletically; frequently winning triathlons and cross-country races, as well as playing competitive hockey, volleyball, and basketball. Weber also founded the charity Wheels for Wells[4], which held cycling events to raise money for clean water projects in Africa[5]. In 2016, Weber and his family moved to Bali, Indonesia, where he graduated high school at the age of 15 and began surfing competitively, but also began to focus most of his time on football.
Career
editIn Canada, Weber played youth football for McKenzie United[1], Calgary Southwest United SC.[6], and Calgary Foothills Soccer Club[7], where he won a provincial championship along with multiple city championships and other trophies, in addition to numerous best player and top scorer awards, including 43 goals in 21 games in 2014.
After moving to Indonesia, Weber joined Putera Pemenang Bali[8], where he played for their u-17 side and made his semi-professional debut for their senior squad at age 16.
In 2018, Weber joined Bali United’s youth program[9], where he scored 8 goals in 3 appearances. However, foreign player regulations prevented him from playing in the national championship[10]
In 2019, Weber joined Lipscomb University Men’s Soccer in Nashville, TN, competing in NCAA Division I[11]. After making just one appearance for Lipscomb, Weber signed his first professional contract with Assalam FC of the East-Timorese Liga Futebol Amadora Primeira Divisão[12]. In his first year with the team, the league was cancelled due to COVID-19. The second year of his contract, the competition was held, but without foreign players, due to East-Timor’s border closure at the time[13]. In preseason leading up to the 2021/2022 season, Weber tore his ACL and meniscus, which led to him missing the entirety of the season. Finally, on February 4, 2023, Weber made his long-awaited debut for Assalam, in which he came on in the 50th minute and scored a penalty. Following his debut, Weber only made one more appearance for Assalam before moving to Rimba Star FC in Brunei Darussalam’s top flight – the Brunei Super League[14]
On May 6, 2023, Weber signed a single-season contract with Rimba Star FC[15], and on May 7, 2023, he made his debut in their matchup against Kuala Belait FC, in which he played 90 minutes and scored Rimba’s only goal of the game. Weber went on to be named captain of Rimba Star and recorded 25 goals and 27 assists in 30 games across all competitions in the 2023-24 season.
