Alok Kumar Kanungo is an Indian author, archaeologist and ethnographer currently Associate Research Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN)[1] and an adjunct Associate research professor at Flinders University, Australia.[2] His work primarily focuses on the study of ancient glass, beads, and indigenous crafts, bridging the gap between traditional knowledge systems and modern archaeological practices.[3][4] He has travelled and documented the heritage of the Nagas of north-east India, and the Bondos and Juangs of Odisha. He is recipient of Humboldt, Fulbright, British Academy, Rakow, Homi Bhabha, SPARC,[5] ICG and ICHR Fellowships.[6][7][8]

Education

Alok Kumar Kanungo was born in Odisha. He pursued his higher education in archaeology, completing his BA from Khallikote College, Berhampur University, 1992, MA from Deccan College, Pune University, 1994, PG Diploma in Museology from Solapur University, 2005 and PhD from Deccan College, 2003.[3]

Kanungo researches on the history and technology of ancient glass and bead-making in South Asia.[9][10][11] He is known for documenting and analyzing indigenous technologies, particularly in relation to glass, ceramics, and metalworking. His ethnographic studies in the Nagaland have contributed to preserving traditional knowledge systems.[12][13][14]

Awards and Recognitions

Alok Kumar Kanungo was awarded the Dr. Malti Nagar Ethnoarchaeology Award by the Indian Society for Prehistoric and Quaternary Studies in 2001, which acknowledged his early academic work in these areas.[15]. Kanungo holds visiting scholar positions at institutions such as the Corning Museum of Glass in New York (June 2019 and July 2022)[16]
